Theroux asked her if she used to inform/warn the girls about potentially negative future consequences of their choice, the low probability of success etc. She replied that the company would probably have run into recruitment problems if she had done so. Or something along those lines, depending on my memory.

I meant I had a problem with the BBC ‘Newsbeat’ article from my original post; in my opinion it certainly does promote unrealistic hopes to the young.

I guess he was mostly referring to younger entrants with potentially unrealistic hopes. Not many do it well enough to really make a living, as I understand it.

Saw this documentary not long ago. I got the impression that it doesn’t necessarily pay much these days. One director (?) would urge his actors to have another/better source of income besides porn.

They never did pay the actors much, the actresses got more, they worked in the principal that most of the men would have done it for free…

As long as she’s happy and free with her choice , i don’t see what can possibly be the problem here , other that some peoples narrowmindness. Besides , why i’m not in her place, career wise? I’m male btw, and thinking only if i had the looks and the “gear” to somehow get in this business. Hell , i could have bought myself a real plane by now ! :p

This is not the victorian era (speaking of the UK), and even so, there’s far too much prejudice and narrowmindness prevalent anyway.

Please stop accusing me of being narrow-minded; I am not narrow-minded and have no problem whatsoever with pornography (except child or abusively exploitative), prostitution, same-sex relationships (marriage and adoption), recreational drug-use, naturism or breast-feeding in public, so long as all these activities adhere to the same sort of safety legislation as any other legal human activity.

I agree. But this isn’t an ‘honest image of what choices are ahead’ is it? And I don’t see too many ‘cons’ being mentioned in this BBC article; do you? Nobody asked Gemma what she is going to do in a few years time when the surgery cannot hold-back the natural ageing process; she’ll only have about forty years left until she can collect her pension.

There are going to be over 750,000 people in the UK turning eighteen in 2012; how many of these do you think are, realistically, going to find gainful employment in the porn industry?

I don’t suppose we can blame the other 749,990 that don’t make it (or don’t make it big on the X-Factor) if they riot when they don’t get paid ‘a ridiculous amount of money’ and nobody buys them a house or a car! :rolleyes:

I have to admit, she is doing a job she obviously gets a lot out of and is doing nicely out of it, I agree with it probably not being the ideal programme to air it on, but I cannot see lots of women going into the business simply on the off chance they might make it big…. Puns intended.

It is something that I didn’t realise until recently but major plastic surgery, breast-implants for example, only have a ‘life’ (I nearly said ‘shelf-life’) of about ten years and it doesn’t get any cheaper having the surgery re-done; something to consider if a twenty-something is getting breast-implants. Presumably the NHS will be expected to foot-the-bill for the increasing number of implants when those that got them cannot afford to pay any more?

I wouldn’t expect NHS to pay for “freshening up” of plastic surgery…but in today’s weird world, who knows? She coluld always make the case that the work is necessary for her livlihood…and some bureaucrat would approve it. 🙂
A friend of my UK-based sister-in-law recently got some national media coverage in the UK for her plastic surgery…all paid for by her husband who is not a wealthy man.

If she were my daughter and was happy in her career field, I’d rather she do that that be a “Tracy in Essex” a hairdresser single mom with two/three kids (each with a different father) living in a council house and driving a rusty Vauxhall.

If the pornographic movie industry had tried to air that piece on the BBC, or even commercial TV or radio, as a commercial to encourage the young to work in the industry how far do you think they’d have got?

Also, just to play devil’s advocate for a minute, Gemma is twenty-eight now; how many years do you think she’s got left in her industry (even with all that surgery)? And who will pick-up the pieces when all the surgery starts to come ‘unstuck’; the NHS?
