Daddy's Girl

Here’s one of my latest works, made last summer… I hope you like it πŸ™‚

http://skyraider3d.military-meshes.com/gallery/DaddysGirl_1500.jpg

After I did my first P-51D Mustang image, “Little Friends” over a year ago, I got lots of requests from family of veteran pilots and Mustang owners for similar artwork. In the meantime I have finished a couple and here is the first.

The aircraft depicted was flown by one of the top Mustang aces Captain Ray Wetmore. He named the aircraft after his first daughter and went on to score over 22 kills against the German Luftwaffe. Sadly Wetmore died in a flying accident in 1951.

This artwork was made for his daughters and son, as well as the owner of a restored Mustang which flies in the exact colours of Wetmore’s Daddy’s Girl.

Here is a side profile of Daddy’s Girl:

Well folks… Have a merry Christmas and the very best wishes for 2006! πŸ˜€

That’s probably a valid point about the props. As most photographs are taken at selected shutterspeeds normally around 1/125 to 1/250 the emphasis is on prop stop/blur effect. Although most photographers ralise that the art of stopping the Prop is not a good idea. Although a lot of airline Photographers seem to stick on 1/1000th sec πŸ˜‰

But as the eyes would see it, you would see a full arc so that probably should be reflected in the painting. After all, your not bound by the same protocols us photographers have. But after saying all that. I still think that it’s an awesome piece of artwork.

What software do you use to create the images?
It looks amasing.

Thanks πŸ™‚
Being an airshow photographer, I usually illustrate my planes as they’re seen on photographs – the the propeller blades visible but blurred. In the near future I will experiment with full prop circles as well and see how those look. Hopefully they’ll give more life to the image.

Props

Skyraider, simply stunning. As near as you can get to being there, IMHO.

Observation: if I was looking at a real image, I think the propellors would appear to be a shiny disc instead of visible blades that appear to be blurred due to movement.

Question: Do you draw moving propellors differently according to the picture, or do you prefer to draw them as shown in the beautiful artwork above?

The XA-38 is an awesome machine πŸ™‚ You could commission me to do one πŸ˜‰

But first the Corsair… model is nearly finished now…

How is it you manage to out-do yourself with each successive work?

I keep on learning with each image I do… πŸ˜‰
I got a new “tricks” on the menu which I haven’t used yet… these include proper refraction in the canopy (the Mustang really needs that!), bending props (as in the old wartime photographs – love that effect!) and fish-eye perspective. Hopefully the last feature will help it fly out of your screen! πŸ˜€

Mother Mary on a pogo stick, that is freakin’ AMAZING, Ronnie.

How is it you manage to out-do yourself with each successive work? I halfway expect your next one to physically fly out of the screen and thwack me in the forehead!

Absolutely stunning stuff, you have my utmost respect.

Merry Christmas and a happy New Year to you and yours! πŸ™‚

Hehe thanks guys πŸ™‚

No, I haven’t done a Lancaster (yet?). Most work these days are commissions so I rarely get to choose my own subjects anymore. The Mustang has proven to be a very enjoyable one though, with lots of scope for different markings etc. I’ve hardly touched on that yet, mainly sticking to the 359th FG so far. But there’s a 4th FG one coming up, as well as an Israeli one and an El Salvador Cavalier Mustang (being shot down by a Honduras Corsair!).

Have you done any lancasters?

Perhaps we could have a poll and ask Skyraider to do the forum one with the highest votes, maybe something a bit unusual. πŸ˜€
