Personal responsibility – nothing to do with the ‘authorities’
In the bits that I read, I didn’t get the impression that there was much ‘slaving’ going on. It looked – as much as anything – that it was ‘slaving’ by at least some degree of consent.
Consent is a strange word,if you are not in a position of knowing any better or somehow being so unaware of how to oppose by the way you are being brainwashed into dependency then it can be seen as a passive consent.
I would imagine all the people concerned were not in a full mental capacity of a normal human being.

I didn’t either. It put me in mind of the small community of Melliah Village in Malta about 50 years ago which was almost entirely inbred and reclusive and a second in the depths of Cornwall near Morvah in the late 60s. I t might be more common than we imagine.

I suppose it is quite normal in extreme isolation where they may never meet other people. To them they are doing nothing wrong, surviving ,breeding etc.We are judging from an educated outsiders point of view.
However ,if they were living in a main stream area THEN authorities will be as much to blame as those people .
We had the case of slavery in THIS country and in the middle of an urban area http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-25059602 ,not that far behind what’s going on in other countries.

It was published because the Australian report was released to the news media.
Awful story, but for once the Mail didn’t blame it on Romanians or suggest any of the children were ‘angel’ Maddie.

Since the story has been published to a greater or lesser extent world wide it is probably substantially true.
Why is it published? Obvious I would have thought. A majority of people lap it up – the more salacious or unpleasant the better.

I suppose we do it to perhaps feel that at least we have some morals and perhaps shatter the rose tinted glasses that may come with our comfortable world.Do we have to be desensitised from reality? When I first saw this story it showed a picture of the filthy plastic covered shack they inhabited. Perhaps they thought they were a bit strong with that and showed an example of Aussie culture. Not bad for the descendants of this countries rejects!:D

Why?
Do not misunderstand me; your emotions are probably exactly the same as most people who have read the ‘story’ but why do we do this to ourselves?
Why do we seek-out this sort of ‘news’ story? Why do the ‘newspapers’ print this sort of story if the reaction of their readers is going to be disgust…..is that how we want to feel?
Also, why the hell was it necessary for the Daily Mail to include that photograph of Sydney Opera House?
