Daily Mail strikes again

In to days edition (answers to correspondents) the paper attempts to answer the question why Lincolnshire is known as The Bomber County and goes on to say that other counties , Norfolk, Suffolk, and Cambridgeshirewere all chosen to house bomber squadrons because they were flat.
Not a mention of Yorkshires 100 bomber airfields or the lovely Halifax grrrr.
In the same informative piece we are told that there was a PRE Lancaster bomber called the Lincoln.

Stop dragging this thread off topic, John.

Here you go, get back to running General Discussion as your personal blog/pensioners lunch club/gossip network/UKIP recruitment centre. Leave this section of the forum to those who can actually formulate a decent argument once in a while.

“formulate a decent argument once in a while…”

So, judged by your own criteria, we won’t be hearing a lot from you then. Every cloud indeed has a silver lining !

Funnily enough this conversation is very much what the much-maligned ‘Media Studies’ was all about. It taught critical thinking, the ability to spot prejudices, preconceptions, assumptions and agendas wherever they come from.

From many/most posts on this forum, it seems that isn’t a popular class in UK (or US for that matter) schools. 🙂

Oddly the only useful education I received I that area were various items in journalism classes while in university and survey methods classes in grad school. Also in Officer Training School, thy had a nice lesson I the various types of arguments and how to spot fallacious ones.

You’d be surprised how many smug “educated” people don’t really think and just accept whatever junk they’ve been fed by the media, peers and parents.

What if you wanted to be a Florist?

Yes, I see where you are coming from. That probably needs a degree or, two.

You have that down to a fine art!

Is ‘General Discussion’ not enough for you? Three sycophantic mates (though one is in the hospital) and dysfunctional moderators. What more do you need?

What i do like about you is that you are a living, breathing advert for extending the height of Hadrian’s Wall.

#43 before writing anything read the bleeding article!

I did. It mentions it is a replica further down the page. The headline itself only implies a Spitfire crash landed. Given that it is RIAT season, and that there have been a number of Battle of Britain events in the last few weeks, the headline made me automatically assume that a real Spitfire had crashed and not some wee replica.

People get endlessly pissy on here if you open a thread called “Vulcan crash” rather than “1958 Syerston Avro Vulcan crash”, after all.

Might just as well do a degree in flower arranging. It will have the same relevance to earning a living.

For the sake of clarity and so there might be no misunderstanding re #31.

No sensitivity at all. I was merely confirming that due to an accident of timing/posting your comment might have appeared you were suggesting there to have been contradictions in my post. I’m grateful to you for confirming that not to have been the case.

Non of it is irrelevant. But you don’t actually engage in serious.

Indulge me on one point that I asked you about… You can’t say it is irrelevant.

For example, you critisise the school system and a section of society (40% of children) for not knowing what the Battle is. You then say there is no excuse for laziness. I asked if you knew about some other equally important parts of history in depth and if indeed you did not did that out you in line for the same contempt as you view the 40% with.

As for your events and societies. All very admirable and I’m sure you’ve dipped in your pocket and put up your fair share of raffle prizes. There is however a difference between the kind of people who like to stick up big stone memorials and those who actually pass it on to the next generation. Stop complaining about the 40% and maybe meet a few and help the number drop a bit. It goes a lot further than laying a wreath on Remembrance.

Ps. If you think what I wrote is sociological twaddle then you really haven’t read much!

You are confused – again. Ir is the educational system that is to blame. The children are supposed to absorb what they are taught and if they are not taught in the first place then the memory of the valiant men and women of the B of B will the more swiftly recede and few will know what actually happened.

That is the nub of the matter. Don’t try to sidetrack or plant ‘red herrings’.

“The ’80 per cent replica Spitfire’ was kept at a private hangar at the airfield, according to a spokesman from a nearby flying school.

Don’t rise to it. John will never give you a solid, tangible, coherent or even especially convincing response. He will endlessly invoke logical fallacies. To give but one example, notice his retort earlier:

“I don’t think that we should extend into too much thread drift. My views on some aspects of education are well known”.

A simple practice; complain when the discussion goes off topic having first seeded the conversation with risible crap. If in doubt, pick apart the spelling or grammar of those trying to call you to task. This works even better when you make spelling and grammatical errors yourself, eh John?

Endless fun and quite readily catagorised as trolling.

I’m very pleased I make you happy. I try to be FUN and it is good to be complimented by an expert. Media studies ? Don’t make me laugh (more FUN) I thought that everyone had a degree in that.

Degrees that have value ? I don’t think that we should extend into too much thread drift. My views on some aspects of education are well known.

So John. Why does media studies make you laugh. Are you able to coherently explain why?

When an impasse has been reached in an argument it is usual to extend the argument and include irrelevant information of the kind you’ve mentioned.

Non of it is irrelevant. But you don’t actually engage in serious.

Incredible moment pilot landed his Spitfire without any WHEELS during strong winds when his landing gear failed to release.

Looks a lot like one of those undersized replicas to me.

How can you criticise the school kids. It’s not their fault they don’t know what they don’t know. That’s not logical. They might know and do lots of offer fabulous other stuff that you don’t know about. You don’t need to know about the BOB to honour those who fought it. Living a good full life etc is the best tribute surely?

There are lots of other important things we should teach children. How, deep is your knowledge of the civil rights movement in the US, or the Suffragettes, or the Industrial Revolution or Magna Carta? If it’s not top notch then by your own standards please berate yourself for your own laziness and ineptitude.

As for you being available… It’s not about been available. It’s about actually getting on your feet and doing something rather than sitting and complaining. Sit up. Pay attention. Didn’t you learn that from the crews in the Battle of Britain. Doing good. Making a difference. Answering the call. I’d imagine all you’ve learnt is fact and figures and how best to memorialise them. The best way to memorialise their efforts is to live, think for yourself and respect others.

No you’re quite wrong. You write exactly the kind of pretentious sociological twaddle that I would expect. Not only that but your interpretation is selective and imaginative. At no point have I ever blamed or criticised the school children who are the subject of the report I quoted.

When an impasse has been reached in an argument it is usual to extend the argument and include irrelevant information of the kind you’ve mentioned. You did not let me down.

If you ‘don’t know about the B of B’ how on earth can you honour those who fought it ? If that is not an outstanding example of distorted and inverted logic that borders the ridiculous, I don’t know what is.

I’m not about to hand you a belt of ammunition and an open target by listing my associations and contributions to various historical societies, events and commemorations.

You’re so much fun John. So media studies has no relevance to warning a living? Seriously. If you work in media, communications, PR or a job in which critical thinking are needed then it does.

Our if interest John, what degrees do you think are worthy and have value?
