Dakota poppy drop.

The Daily Mail website says that two DC3s will ‘drop 1.3m poppies over the Thames in London at 6pm on Armistice day’ and all the bridges will be lit in red each night until Sunday. A poppy drop in the dark, with or without searchlights?

Were there two Dakota`s used for the poppy drop?

Yep, G-AMRA and G-ANAF. I was on AF and I just hope it looked as good from the the ground as it did from 1000ft! Not had chance to download the photos yet but will post a few here if they come out ok.

Has the system got more sophisticated since? And are they now more accurate? That first drop (Lichfield?) was a bit of a shambles

It was basically a large sack so I’m not sure sophisticated is the right word! They did have a lid to stop the petals being sucked out before we reached the DZ though!

Just seen a five second clip of a Dak over London on ITV news. It looked fantastic. Were there two Dakota`s used for the poppy drop? Would like to have seen a longer clip but i guess it was not the only thing to happen today.

Poppy drop

Nice photos – lets hope that the BBC shows the drop at 18.00 – today in Truro when the claxon went off at 11.00 lots of young people stood still in Lemon Quay as a mark of respect, with quite a few senior citizens weaving their way through them !!!

As it is the 60th anniversary next year, perhaps more of these Poppy drops will go on throughout the country…?
I really hope so.

All I know is the bridges will be closed, so one would assume through the middle of “That London”.

AF just went over, and I don’t think RA came back from her Coventry drop so have they gone to Northolt?

I think one of them is doing a poppy/rose petal drop over Coventry this morning (assume RA?).

Got any ETD’s Tom?

It’ll be G-AMRA and G-ANAF from Air Atlantique. RA was being repainted over the weekend and should have been at Northolt yesterday for a photo shoot. Apparently it is with search lights and its actually rose petals we’ll be dropping.

Tom.

Tom,

I seem to remember back in 1996 that the procedure involved all the poppies in a big dust sheet which was then pushed towards the side doors.

Has the system got more sophisticated since? And are they now more accurate? That first drop (Lichfield?) was a bit of a shambles.

Ooh err, Northolt 😀
Will they operate out of Northolt for the drop???
Nice to have a real aeroplane here again. It seems years since the days of regular BBMF visits…. 🙁
