I was just flicking through some old magazines I found in my late Dad’s model workshop and in an issue of the British magazine Radio Control Scale Aircraft from 1986 I found this photo, which I’ve photographed as I haven’t got a scanner here.
Does anyone know what film work this mock up was done for? It looks terrific. The magazine doesn’t say what it was done for as it was simply using it as an example for something else (too slow on approach).

Its G-ALYF that was from Glasgow Airport Fire Dump

The Dakota was G-ALYG.
Are you sure David? According to the Civil register, G-ALYG was allocated to an Auster 5.

It Went Something like this

This crash was from the first episode when the aircraft took off with the undercarriage safety pins were left in. The RAF crew were carrying contraband and rushed the preflights when the MPs turned up. It took off, was heavy and failed to clear the house because of the drag from the U/C.
The Ice crash was a lot later in the series when a Ruskins airlines C47 hit a snow bank after an aborted take off due to ice.

Airline
I can just about remember Airline, I must have been about 5 or 6 years old at the time.
Remember seeing G-AGHY at Stapleford airshow in the early 80’s 🙂
I have a photo of it somewhere aswell.

Dakota was ex-Glasgow Airport
I can give you a bit more detail about the Dakota crash sequence. The Dakota which ended up on the roof of the farmhouse was a wreck which was obtained from the Fire Dept at Glasgow Airport. It was used for training firemen.
The tail was missing so a cardboard mock up was created for the sequence which also used a large model Dakota on wires and a model farmhouse.

Airline series
Back in the early 80`s I was on my way home to York, I drove past Rufforth airfield, (where I now fly gliders and Tugs).
As I passed the village on the York side I noticed smoke and the empenage of what looked a Dakota sticking out of a hanger, with what looked like a huge hole in the hanger doors.
Shock and horror! I stopped and left my car, to better view this appalling accident.
It was a staged film set, for I was told the ITV series Airline
anyone remember this?

If you look at the clip from You Tube I posted above you will find that the Roy Marsden character was flying for the RAF Transport Command in the first episode.
No, I’m happy to take your word for it.;)

With all that planning how come the mock up on the roof was in military markings? ( Continuity girl’s day off?)

Can’t help wondering if this is where they got the idea for that story line.;)

Thanks.
A few more magazines down the stack and I found this shot of two of the large scale models used to make the series. Aren’t they lovely.

As said above, it was from the ITV series Airline, in which a fully loaded Dakota, with ice on wings failed to gain height after take-off.
The large-scale models were built by David Boddington, who also made models and replicas for the BBC WW-1 series Wings and for the Edwardian drama series Flambards.
