As the a/c were landing after the ‘Balbo’ there was a frisson of excitement from some of the crowd. They had seen a collision and an a/c go down but a slowly descending parachute was seen so apparently the pilot got out OK.
Shortly afterwards this SkyRaider landed with part of a wing missing and it was believed that Big Beautiful Doll was the one to down.
Can anyone confirm this and does anyone know if the pilot was OK? (fingers crossed)
This was their final pass

Interesting article by Rob Davies in the Weekend supplement of today’s Guardian (not a paper I read very often, but I had read all the rest!) about the crash.
He said that the Skyraider pilot “freely admitted” that it was his fault because he had turned too sharply and lost sight of BBD.
Rob also said that he was at about 250 ft when he finally got out (my initial guess – from a long way away – was 200 ft) whereas other estimates have said about 400-500ft, and then hit both his arm and his helmet on the tail-plane of BBD as he dived past it. As has been said before, “lucky man”, but very well practiced in getting out of planes!

Further to my previous post it would appear that Rob was as low as he looked when he got out. Considering he hit the tailplane on the way he is avery lucky man. I forget where I read it but they reckon he is the first pilot to bale out of a Mustang in European airspace since WWII. I am just happy that bot pilots are ok.

The bailout looked closer than it was as there is quite a dip off the end of the airfield. I feel sure Rob stayed with it so long to make sure there was nothing he could do to save the situation. Looking at how much wing the Skyraider lost I am surprised the pilot managed to get it down safely. A fine demonstration of piloting skills.

Have look at this to see how close to the ground the bailout was

Im not what was going on there today, first EP120 hit a hole on take off and was flying sideways for a while and then the DR.1 nosed over and now this! Great show and its a pity it ended in this way.I bet the press are going to have a field day!
I hope both pilots are OK and nobody was injured on the ground.
