Dambusters filming – soon

When it comes to filming the Ground scenes they will almost certainly use a real Lanc for the boarding shots, engines start, taxi run etc

Which example is likely to be used for filming?

I would guess NX611 but whichever they choose will need conversion work – how much would need doing cosmetic wise to make a Lancaster B7 look acceptable? I doubt they would change the props.

Duxford’s Lanc maybe?

I´m sure that one has the wrong shade of black. I´m sure Corgie has the only Lanc fit for purpose. :diablo: 😀 😀

Well it won’t be PA474 as she is back to bare metal now and minus engines.

…and “Woodford”, too. KB976 was flown transatlantic to Strathallan in the mid-70s, acquired by Charles Church in the early 80s and as mentioned heavily damaged when a hangar roof let go at Woodford where she was being restored to fly. Subsequently a replacement fuselage (from KB994 iirc) was sourced from Alberta, and ultimately much of the project went to Kermit Weeks, with other components finishing up at Sandtoft…

Whatever happened to the Charles Church lanc

It was the ex-Strathallan Lanc. It was badly damaged when the roof collapsed on it at Woodbridge around 1997. Eventually it was sold to Kermit Weeks who still has it in Florida though some sections of the aircraft remained behind in the UK

Apparently the film is going to be completely shot in NZ and full scale mock ups are going to be used on the ground, the rest will be either miniatures or CGI.

well obviously the bomb doors have to come off, how much work would be needed to convert the bomb bay?

A LOT!! And I seriously doubt the owners would allow it, regardless of how much money is thrown at them.

My bet? One or two of the full-scale mock-ups will be used at an airfield location in the UK….

I’m wondering if perhaps they might do the filming with the unmodified aircraft, and then do a bit of digital nipping and tucking to remove and modify whatever features they fancy. Sounds like a fiddly business, but perhaps a cheaper option than actually making any real mods??

Using Jane as-is with ‘AJ-whatever’ on the side would look pretty naff, really.

With some clever camera angles, they wouldn’t have to, and 99% of the audience wouldn’t notice, or care, that it’s the wrong version….
