Dambusters meets Star Wars, the comparison

Did you know that the end battle in Star Wars was based on the end of the Dambusters.

Connections.

Waves of three aircraft attack, line abreast down a valley / trench.
Guns on the towers fire back. The targetting system are two bars which, at a predetermined point, line up and the bombs are released.
Still not convinced.

“How many guns Red 2?”
“I’d say about fifty guns, some on the walls, some on the towers”

“How many guns d’you think leader?”
“I’d say about fifty guns, some in the fields, some in the towers”

Star wars is also based on films such as The Wizard of Oz (tin man – c3po, toto – r2d2, line – wookie etc)

RE: Dambusters meets Star Wars … and 633 Squadron?

Agree totally.
Incidentally the Japanese Quirasawa movies (spelling!) were nicked for the film “The Good, the bad and the ugly”, although I forget which one.

RE: Dambusters meets Star Wars … and 633 Squadron?

Snoopy,

Absolutely right on!

“633 Squadron” was Mosquitos taking out a German factory placed up a Noregian Fjord. Rent this movie and you will see were Lucas lifted scenes shot for shot.

The truth of the matter is that the orginal Star Wars was an “homage” (better than saying a rip off) to so many great old movies from Westerns to War Films.

Interesting parallels, Munnst.

I have also read that the Death Star attack sequences in Star Wars were inspired by “633 Squadron” — attacking down a narrow valley. Have you heard this one?

Regards,

Snoopy

Its inspired by loads of films. As you no doubt know TIEs were made from Sherman tank turrets, the original also borrows from Casablanca.

The Phantom Menace has a tribute to 2001 in which one of the capsules is lying in Whattos junk yard.

RE: Dambusters meets Star Wars, the comparison

The primary source that George Lucas admits to being inspired by for the original Star Wars film is ‘The Hidden Fortress’ by Akira Kurosawa. The final battle scenes were based on all sorts of clips of original dog fights, which were actually used in the test print of the film before the final effects were finished-‘Dambusters’ has never been one of these.
