Dambusters Remake Cancelled/Delayed?

On the Independent website today:

The Dambusters remake has gone back into its hangar, says Peter Jackson

Earlier this year, Sir David Frost announced to much fanfare that he was to executive-produce a remake of the classic WW2 movie Dambusters, in conjunction with the Director, Producer and all round film mogul Peter Jackson.

A full-scale replica of a Lancaster bomber was built. Stephen Fry was brought in to write the script, and many chins were stroked over whether to rename the famous aircrew’s pet dog, which in the original 1950s film is called Nigger.

That was then. Today, Mr Jackson – who holds purse strings for the project – was interviewed by the Hollywood Reporter. A couple of paragraphs from the end, he is said to have made a startling admission: the film, which has been so eagerly trumpeted, is now apparently “on the back burner.”

Being “on the back burner” is of course Hollywood-speak for “we’ve lost interest in this and it’ll quite possibly never get made.” Which would be a huge disappointment for Messers Fry and Frost, not to mention several generations of British movie-goers.

Asked why he’d taken the decision to “back-burner” the film, Mr Jackson allegedly told the Hollywoood Reporter that the Dambusters story, about the RAF crew who helped develop the bouncing bomb, which was tested over the Ladybower reservoir in Derbyshire (like in the picture above), is”too English.”

To which I respond with a simple, Anglicised question: what the blazes did he expect?

UPDATE – Tuesday 6.20am GMT… Peter Jackson’s spokesman just returned my call. The film remains “in development,” but does not have a date to begin shooting. Mr Jackson denies saying that the Dambusters story was “too English” in his Hollywood Reporter interview. Instead he claims to have described it as “very English.” I hope to get to the bottom of this extremely serious matter tomorrow.

I think you are all missing the point gentlemen, our young men have to shoot…. oops, sorry wrong film, but you get the idea.

One of the key actors, my dog, is not getting any younger, his scenes need to be shot now

You’re right you know, he is a dead ringer for Sir Arthur Harris.

Come on guys we’ve had the ‘Nigger’ debate at least 1,000 times and that’s only in the past year.

There are two views and nothing we say here is going to make the slightest difference, let’s just move on.

This isn’t censorship, it’s just the suppression of tedium.

Thank you Moggy, it was going that way again.
I am trying everything to be involved with this film, one day I could be posting my looking back at the Dambusters filming pics.
I hope there will be a making of extra with the DVD.

that was another point. The dog was black hence it’s name. and as you say it was acceptable to describe anything black in that way. apologies for the spelling and grammer, i seem unable to type today

I really don’t see the problem.
1) It’s historically accurate and was a word in normal usage in that timeframe without the racist meaning.
2) How many modern rapsongs have that word in them 50 times per minute? You don’t hear anyone complaining if a rapper uses it!

The dogs name is a difficult problem for PJ. He’s probably cursing Gibbo for not having the foresight to see that a film may be made about his exploits in future and his dog’s name no longer being acceptable in society 😛 Trying to be extremely careful here as its a delicate subject but if I was PJ, I would be inclined to leave it in. Yes it is classed as racist now but at the end of the day you dont set out to make a dambusters film and change it so its no longer historically accurate. In my opinion, it may be a minor change on the whole of it but if your going to change the dogs name, you may as well have the Lanc’s bombing the Hoover Dam in America. I’m not racist and have never used the word apart from in the context of the film refering to Gibbo’s dog.

Well it shouldn’t be. It just exemplifies the stupid PC world in which we are obliged to live. I doubt there is a single black individual who would give it a second thought and would probably find the whole discussion quite bizarre. Nigger was what GG called his dog because he was, surprise, surprise, a black dog, and Nigger is what he should be called in the film.

Considering how Gibson’s dog (he who can’t be named) met his end, that could be dangerous. 😀

My dog “Trufflington” waited years for the studio call- alas it never came and now he is now going grey and thus a little too mature for the part…………………..

I’m sure his turn will come someday in another movie – perhaps when they remake”War Dogs of the Pacific”.

Re the film – well I think we will just have to wait and see.

Thanks Dave. The report was the first thing that appeared to have any substantive comment from Jackson for a while which was why I put it up. Maybe you’re getting more down there than we are getting here as it had gone quiet for a good few months.

My apologies Webpilot but the report was suspect from the beginning, in that it was the only place reporting this. It would have been big news if it was cancelled (which backburner does not mean at all).

They have been saying filming will start in 2010 for ages now. It’s all scheduled. The Lovely Bones is finished (it had it’s last Premiere today in Wellington), plus other big projects are out of the way, and now the studio is moving onto The hobbit and Dambusters, as has always been reported. Maybe you guys are not getting the full gen up-over?

I quite agree with the change in title as I posted the report for information and discussion. The report suggested that maybe back burner was media speak for deferred indefinitely so I rather resent the accusation of a “tabloid-style lying title”. The author of the report had apparently spoken to a spokesman for Jackson so there did appear to be evidence of some research and not simply jumping to conclusions.

Hi Moggy,

Not sure if this even warrants a question mark as post 71 seems to imply from Mr Jackson himself that filming should be taking place in 2010, hence not cancelled and maybe no longer delayed either. can this not be merged into the other Dambuster film thread?

Now – I’ll ask again for goodness sake – can a moderator please change the tabloid-style lying title of this thread?

Done. Converted into a question for discussion.
