Not sure if this has been remarked on yet, but there’s finally some truth to the story. See the BBC article here…
With Peter Jackson at the helm, producing anyway, it should be a faithful attempt. I can’t wait to see it to be honest!
Cheers. Richard

having just watched a rerun of Blazing Saddles I was amused at how many times the Nigger word was used (it is a comedy ) , so a few mentions of a pet dog wil not rock the boat.

You know, it wouldn’t cost much to CGI some of the now-outdated shots in the original film. There maybe around twenty shots in the original, which if replaced would make for an even better film. Why bother remaking the entire film? The original had excellent acting and a brilliant score. The only thing that let the side down were the special effects and the Official Secrets Act (the bouncing bomb was still classified in the 1950s). Add a few wide angle shots of Scampton and job done and for a fraction of the cost of remaking the entire film.
Regarding Nigger. If you keep the word in you offend a few from the PC brigade and that’s all, but if you leave it out then the BNP and other groups will get involved and a lot of regular chaps (none-racists and aviation enthusiasts and the general public) are going to get rather vocal, but maybe that’s what the producers want – free publicity to put bums on seats. Poor Nigger :o(

Dambusters in 3D?
Looks like they’re toying with the idea of making the film in 3D. Should be quite a sight at the IMAX.
“Jackson is also producing a remake of a World War II pilot movie, Dam Busters, which may actually be his first 3D film. Currently they are doing tests of flight scenes in 3D, which he showed clips of. They look fantastic, and the 3D mixed with the vintage look of the film is quite striking.”

Why is it whenever I read one of your posts Pete, I hear Victor Meldrew’s voice in my head?
Well said that man, also made me laugh to remember Victor Meldrew. I see you are also a neighbour of mine in Cambridge, I live about 20 mins away 😉
I’m looking forward to this film and have been for a long time, it doesn’t really matter what they call the dog. While it’s an integral part of the fact/story/film and the PC brigade will have won a minor victory if they change it, it’s the retelling of the story that is important. If it can bring the events of WWII to another generation then it will have done part of the job, lest we forget etc 😉
Historicaly correct ?
As I understand it so as to be accurate and also historicaly correct the film is to be made in India, and Mel Gibson (yes a direct decendant of Guy ) is to play Barns Wallis just to show that it was the good old USA that provided the means and expertise . While Guy Gibson is to be played by that excelent young movie actor Samuel L. Jackson ( Gibson as you will be aware was a member of the Eagle squadron and had flown form the USA with a new Bomber destined for the French Air force but they could not hold out in time for his arrival so he returned to great britain with this fine war prize – the First Beoing built Avro Lancaster Special ).
Well alls well that ends well and the yanks wone the war again
Oh I forgot there is a romantic interlude, Gibon, (Samuel L. Jackson) falls for
a young Waff officer( never just an erk ) who is played by English actress Jessie Wallace late of TV Eastenders in the part she plays an east end girl who has lost her family to the bombing And finds new hope with Guy(Samuel) in the USA after the successful Damms Raid.
Let’s do the whole thing properly with Eighth Air Force B17s using a single 500 lb bomb carrying iot the raid in daylight. Who will care for N*gger then

I believe in a gesture to certain sensitivities, and in the interests of appearing to move slightly with the times a certain dark hued labrador will be called –
Snoop Dog Dog.

Two excellent films i can think of ,well i thought they were excellent anyway,Downfall and Das Boot, just out of interest how did they fair in the filling cinemas and making money stakes?
Das Boot was the most profitable German film of all time IIRC. May have been trumped by now, I don´t know.

My point of course was simply that Jackson is a ‘do-er’ and whether or not there is other material we’d like to see filmed, give him some credit for actually getting something positive achieved. I suspect he’ll do a rather splendid job.
Neither was I singling out this forum, as there are innumerable such forums, the output from which, whilst not unpleasant, could power a small wind farm. Sort of Facebook for aviation enthusiasts. Likewise, the non-trumpeting do-ers will know full well my swipe wasn’t intended in their direction and be too busy ‘doing’ to notice or care anyway….:diablo:

Sadly (because something more original could have been done – Amiens anyone?) the film is underway.
Personally, I’d love to see a decent film about Jericho too, but to say ‘Sadly the film is underway.’ with regard to the new Dambusters film is a completely daft comment. PP.
Perhaps my comment was a little harsh. However it’s my opinion, and in my opinion, I think remakes in general show a poverty of creative imagination. I’d hope if Jackson was really really keen he might like to choose a fresh canvas – from the hundreds of great stories so-far untold on film. It’s his prerogative to go over old ground, it’s mine not to like it.
Fact; The person behind this film is a well known advocate of historic aviation, who has, and IS putting his money where his mouth is. He contributes, – he doesn’t just just expend hot air like many anoraks who have never lifted a finger other than contribute to the vast superfluity of forum pages on the web.
Thanks for your insight within that superfluity. Personally I prefer not to be rude about the media I’m in at the time and the people in it in inaccurate, sweeping generalisations, and there’s a lot more than anoraks on this forum, some who prefer not to trumpet their achievements.

Doolittle.
Sadly (because something more original could have been done – Amiens anyone?) the film is underway.
If they want to re-tell the story of the Dams Raid…why not. I’ll go and see it for one. As long as they do a good job and they don’t try to re-write the facts – then great. I’ll always love the original anyway, and no, it’s not ‘stilted’. Fact; The person behind this film is a well known advocate of historic aviation, who has, and IS putting his money where his mouth is. He contributes, – he doesn’t just just expend hot air like many anoraks who have never lifted a finger other than contribute to the vast superfluity of forum pages on the web.
Jacksons team have a superb track record. Personally, I’d love to see a decent film about Jericho too, but to say ‘Sadly the film is underway.’ with regard to the new Dambusters film is a completely daft comment. PP.

🙂 Better to have it made so it an be criticised than not made at all and not have a choice whether to see it 😉
It’s then up to the film maker to stake his reputation and live/die by his mistakes. He gets it right it stands him in good stead.

perhaps Peter Jackson is having second thoughts, whats the point in splashing out a fortune on a film that may only appeal to a critical Flypast Forum audience, I can’t see it filling cinemas in the USA and making a profit.
Why is it whenever I read one of your posts Pete, I hear Victor Meldrew’s voice in my head? This story is one of the best known air stories of WWII thanks to Paul Brickhill’s book, the original film, and countless documentaries, books, articles etc. since the war. The 1950’s film is hugely popular with a very wide audience, this is obvious from the DVD sales it still gets across the world, the multitude of screenings it gets on television networks around the world, and the parodying of it in popular culture. The theme tune alone is like a minor British national anthem.
Yet you think only a few boring old farts on an anorak forum would watch it, (no doubt with the intent of hoping to point out where the film went wrong.)
Does it really matter whether it does well in US cinemas or not? There have been bigger budget films that have bombed at the cinemas but made their money back later. Cinema sales are a lesser consideration for many big budget films these days, it is after sales where they make their money. DVD packages, sales to DVD rental chains, TV broadcast rights, murchandise sales, etc.
The film is being made, it will be great with the team it has behind it, and I am certain it will do very well across the world because people know the story, they know what Lancasters were, they know the production company, they know the producers, they know the writer, they know it will be better than the original film in terms of special effects, accuracy, and in some cases acting techniques.
This will bring the story of the Dams Raid and the story of Bomber Command to a new generation and more generations to come after that in a way that the stilted ancient 1950’s film never could. It will be brilliant. Sure, other stories could have been told but it is well worth retelling this one too.
It seems to me you won’t be satisfied till Peter Jackson himself comes on the forum and tells you to shut the hell up.
