Dangerous UK Airports

After seeing the report by Keltic on dangerous Spanish Airports, what do we think is the most dangerous UK airport?

Could it be LHR due to the immense amount of Traffic?
Could it be LBA – On top of a hill (fog/mist), short badly orientated runway, with a steep glideslope at one end (see accompanying British Airtours Pic),
Could it be Stornaway with its harsh weather conditions?

Opinions plse!

Well, I would say that Heathrow is fine. I also used to work in Air traffic and I know the excellent standard of ATC in this country.

I would say the toughest airfields are the Channel Islands with the strong winds. But, I would say the worst for near misses is White Waltham. I have nearly come a croppppper in there many a time with the amount of aircraft and lack of ATC and aircraft without a radio. It’s madness on a nice Sunday afternoon.

no Probs LBARULES- You can often get some short notice arrvials data from a couple of airport employees – ones an ATC officer and the other is Operations Planner for the airport

Dundee is not that bad an airport. I have had a couple of flying lessons from there and its been okay. Great views from above though.

leeds bradford is very awkward eg last friday 25/04 about 5 flight were cancelled coming into lba and the other 1 was delayed indefinitly.surley the staff must get sick and tired of the fog you can hardly see in front of your eyes. i was on the grass at the side of the tunnel with myt g-pids taking off right in front of me and i couldnt see it so it must be very awkward for the pilots

yea i agree with the statements made there about LBA. The fact is the main probelms are SHORT runway, HILLTOP possition exposing to FOG, 14/32 orientated runway which leads to CROSSWINDS, and the lack of CAT3 ILS on 14, which is prodominantly the rwy in use when Fog occurs. CAT3 on 14, and an extra few hundred feet on 14/32 would probably further reduce this number of Diversions – anyway we dont see Teeside, Manchester, Humberside or East Mids complaining when we send a/c that way!

btw moondance i take it you fly for BA?

I would say that phrase is correct if you stick the word ‘mainland’ between ‘UK’ and ‘airports’.

I don’t think runway lengths and traffic should be the major concerns. Don’t forget, air traffic control can make an airport “dangerous”. Was it Tenerife in the 70s where poor communication between ATC and two aircraft led to a disaster where two 747s collided?

Although this was due to the unco-operative pilot of one aircraft, no effort was made to tell him to stop I believe?

no problem mate – it was just the secondary runway information you had!

Just a little differance between LHR and Plymouth then!

I stand corrected – I got my data from the database in the Airline game, which has been known to get the facts wrong from time to time!

I had been working on –

PLH – 759m
LCY – 1,508m

For comparison

LHR – 3,902m

well i wouldn’t sat that – the charts i have state

LCY – Rwy 10/28 Total Rwy length 1199m x30
PLY – Rwy 13/31 Total Rwy length 1161m x30
Rwy 06/24 Total Rwy length 752m x26

hope its of some use Mongu!

How about Plymouth?

In terms of runway length, it makes LCY look like Andrews Air Force Base!

yea more of less Softlad – 14 has a slightly higher approach slope – i believe he came in high and fastand touched down near the 09/27 intersection.

btw Pembo, Tristars aint too big for NM really – we get DC-10 and B747 movements every now and again – usually when LUFC are in Europe.

best i can remember was an EI A330 training – his first stop was LBA and he was going to head up to Prestwick after to bash the circ for a couple of hours, so he prob had 3 or 4 hours fuel on board which i didn’t think would be a problem. Neway on finals he captain didn’t look very impressed and said we’ll never put her in there, they did in the end, but he had his doubts!
