Daniel Craig, the best James Bond since Connery?

surely its all subjective – Bond movies are reflections of their times almost. Connery was the start and most people’s top man. Moore was a 70’s image, big lapels, flares, light weight plots etc. Dalton never got off the ground (lots of behind the scenes issues with rights etc and some scripts that had about 25 writers) Brosnan even now can look dated but certainly in the first few gave it new life. Craig is taking the movies back to the start of Bond’s life and yes, they had to look at Bourne but not copy it. Lazenby, poor old George, personally he did OK, but having Connery before him, and then after him, what chance did he have…..?

Each to their own, I can watch Connery, Brosnan as stand alone movies, Craig I enjoy a lot now, Dalton I can tolerate on a cold wet afternoon if the TV remote is out of reach…. Roger Moore – sorry, not for me even though he in Live & Let Die was my first Bond movie.

Roger Moore……no question for me, followed by Connery and then by whoever. As for Craig?? now where me Bourne DVDs!

Went to see Quantam last night.

Excellent movie, Bond as it should be, though I might take issue with the speed of some of the editing at moments of excitement.

I work on the “fringe” of film supplying tech support to editors, TV production etc and sat with an editor watching the movie and he was ranting and raving in the chase scene through the tunnel – far too fast to follow it, but superb movie as you say.

But isn’t that the point? Casino Royale is how Bond became Bond, a rookie sent in to do a job the only way he knows how. It’s not until later that he becomes the suave superspy that everyone already knows.

I watched Casino Royale for the first time last night and was somewhat disappointed. The humour had gone and DC was just a thug as mentioned by others.

Went to see Quantam last night.

Eager for the next one. The franchise is well and truly refreshed.

Dan Bradley was hired as second unit director because of his work on the second and third Bourne films, so the film would continue the gritty action style begun in Casino Royale.

Sorry, I knew something to do with Solaces action had to do with Bourne. I jumped at conclusions when I mouthed out about the production team.

I think it’s true that the Bourne stories/films were influenced to a degree by James Bond, which was in turn (in the last two films, anyway) influenced by Bourne.

The revamp of the series was definitely needed – the last couple of Brosnan films were bordering on the level of Roger Moore-type absurdity.

Or, IMO a series far superior to Bond (Spy type) films was the “Bourne” trilogy.

It’s not Bond anymore. It is excellent viewing, but it isn’t the James Bond we can safely watch at 5pm Christmas day.
They have had to violence it up a bit to make sales in the USA. Just like Batman, how dark and grim have they made that!
Bond is now a total action movie, and if I want total action…as stated earlier Rambo / Seagal / Willis will suffice. Or, IMO a series far superior to Bond (Spy type) films was the “Bourne” trilogy.
On the actual topic, I likes Connery, but the wit in Roger Moore’s Bond was dry and cutting and so British.

For me, Sean Connery was the best, with Daniel Craig a close second, followed by Pierce Brosnan and Timothy Dalton. George Lazenby looked the part but wasn’t charismatic enough and poor Roger Moore was wasted on the scripts he was given.

Before I opened this thread, that is the first thing that came to my mind. People cringe at who the new Doctor is/may be, but a lot of the time it is because they are used to a particular one. After spending time with a new one, they become more accustomed to them.

Well said Bruggen – all the things that make Bond, Bond are missing from DC – he has no humour, charisma or sophistication. After Casino Royale I really have got no interest in seeing the latest one.

As has been said, I think the whole point of Craig is that he is Bond at the beginning. Rough around the edges before all the experience (and ladies!). Think Batman Begins – a darker, more edgy look into the early days.

I unfortunately grew up in the Brosnan era. Where as he certainly had the humour and charisma, I never ranked him as high as my nations own Sir Sean. I think I prefer Craig now though, I love his ‘no nonsense’ attitude.

I read a lot of the books in my youth, before seeing Dr No at the cinema.

Connery was an interpretation of Fleming’s Bond, and at the time seemed quite close.

Then over the years the franchise drifted into pastiche under Moore et al. Nothing like Fleming’s Bond, just special effects, gadgets, titillation, weak jokes and double entendre.

I watched Casino Royale this last weekend.

That’s more like it!

The best since Connery? Definitely not.

I’m personally actually quite disappointed. They turned the James Bond movies into what I’d describe as a pretty regular action thriller, with violence, some special effects, and not much else.

While the actor is good, I’d rate him below Sean Connery & Roger Moore for that reason.

I’m with Lav on this. Craig does appear to be the darker Bond as in the books (I have most if not all and have read them all).
I grew up with Moore but I don’t really have a favourite but Craig certainly has something.

I’m of the Sean Connery age group,but Danial craig is growing on me ,as a kid i was given a 1950s casino royal book.Craig comes across as the psychopath that i read bond to be.

That’s the thing tho, nobody’s interested in the books anymore, you think of Bond, and Connery, and Moore spring to mind.
