Peter,

the long term aim is a complete, but statically restored DAP Beaufort aircraft, the cockpit, while completely restored, is not to airworthy condition.

A little background…

The Department of Aircraft Production (DAP) was the factory next to Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation (CAC) set up at Fisherman’s Bend outside Melbourne to licence build Beauforts. They also sorted out some of the Beaufort’s problems, so the RAAF Beauforts performed better (less badly?) than the RAF’s in Europe. A DAP Beaufort can normally be destinguished by the long leading edge strake on the fin. DAP and CAC were very important as wartime factories in Melbourne, and Moorabbin aim to commemorate their role in the city.

Peter, I don’t know authoritatively, but from my knowledge, I do know Moorabbin don’t fly their aircraft – remember they have the compete Beau with engine that were run some years ago. They’ve refused some very nice offers to but it, and they won’t rebuild it to fly as it’s original, complete, and they want to keep it that way! I understand the Beaufort is to make a complete example. A cockpit’s a good start!
