Apologies to all if this has already been posted – did a search, but found nothing.
Not sure if anyone else was aware of this – I wasn’t until today – but Darrel “Shifty” Powers, one of the heroes of Easy company as depicted in the film “Band Of Brothers” passed away on June 17th.
Powers jumped into Normandy on D-Day, missing his drop zone eventually making contact with Easy Company. He participated in the assault of Carentan and every major battle Easy Company was involved with until the end of the war. He was considered by many to be the best shot in the company.
Always came across as a quiet, humble and unassuming man, despite what he had experienced during the Second World War.
Sometimes the passing of real heroes, unfortunately, goes un-noticed.

You’re right about how modest his generation was about their courage.Just last week I was talking to an old boy in the queue in the supermarket who told me he’d been on a ship that was torpedoed in an Atlantic convoy and still had nightmares about it.What a debt we owe these men .
