Darwin is alive and well..at least his theory is…

Tragic…
but I’m afraid it proves a point.

ONONDAGA, N.Y. (AP) – Police say a motorcyclist participating in a protest ride against helmet laws in upstate New York died after he flipped over the bike’s handlebars and hit his head on the pavement.

The accident happened Saturday afternoon in the town of Onondaga, in central New York near Syracuse.

State troopers tell The Post-Standard of Syracuse that 55-year-old Philip A. Contos of Parish, N.Y., was driving a 1983 Harley Davidson with a group of bikers who were protesting helmet laws by not wearing helmets.

Troopers say Contos hit his brakes and the motorcycle fishtailed. The bike spun out of control, and Contos toppled over the handlebars. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Troopers say Contos would have likely survived if he had been wearing a helmet.

Hi Rick. I have seen a video of a VERY large group of these idiots.
I have also watched films where very famous actors, (Stunt riders no doubt) have a chase scene on a M/cycle and not wearing a helmet, not a good advert for those youngsters who own motorcycles and who are watching. I suppose it’s the old Macho thing, however, head is definately softer than tree trunk!!

Whilst I feel sorry for those he left behind, at 55 yrs of age, he should have known better.
I remember the hoo haa when the law was passed, that we in GB had to wear them, and also seat belts.(Yes, I know you don’t have to wear a crash helmet on a Trike) Seemed damned stupid at the time, but common sence now.

In the US we have this organization called ABATE & their main bone of contention with the helmet laws is allegded injuries caused by helmets. They spout this uninformed crap to the moronic cruiser crowd who buy it hook, line & sinker.

I had a cousin (no helmet) who crashed through a phone box when I was barely a year old. He died in hospital just before my 40th. 39 years dying ain’t much of a living…

That’ll teach me to tell the truth on here!:) I wonder how many forum members live “squeaky-clean” lives and never risk those lives in favour of their families and those who have to clean up after them….

SkyHigh. Pete, I am amazed at you, not wearing a helmet when cycling. I know it’s your peroggative, but get one buddy, if not for your sake, for your families.

never ride without one after i had a 60mph crash and put a dent in a brand new 4hrs old nolan glass fibre full face ( ironicly baught on friday the 13th )

i remember my brother comming home from the millitary on his triumph bonneville it was when the helmet law came in i’d guess early 70’s

as i remember him comming home in no helmet but buying one and returning in it at the time he was in the royal artillerys trials team ( he won the odd trophy ) so was used to wearing helmets

ironicly after all his big bikes and team membership it was a small bike he had his worst accident on but 100% sure without a helmet it would have been a morgue visit as his head smashed the rear screen and collided with the rear roof pillar on the way through

i’m going back to bikes after a few years break and guaranteed i’ll have the best helmet ( both in fit and quality ) i can afford and full leathers and boots ( even in summer )

i had a few spills when younger without the correct gear and don’t fancy going there again

but having said that the report does not actualy say what he died of !!

it mereley says he collided head first , the best helmet in the world won’t stop your kneck breaking !!

Well, that’s true and we are all guilty of taking similar risks, I suppose. I cycle most days and never wear a helmet although I know I should but I have been riding without one for about 65 years!!

S.H. Absolutely none at all. And no doubt there is some quango set up when the Law changed who could tell us exactly how many fatal motorcycle accidents happened through head injuries, even when the rider was wearing a helmet. And their demise was caused by head injuries.

Possibly the worst thing I see, and I wince when I do, is on a hot day, and some young teenager, or even older rider is wearing nothing more than a “T” shirt, shorts, and sandles.
I have attended many RTAs like that, and even though the rider has slid along the road for a few yards, it had taken skin off arms, legs, etc, right down to the bone.

Dying for what you believe in is a two edged sword. His family might not feel it was worth it unless his death will result in the law being changed. I somehow doubt it.

Linc – so, it wouldn’t have made any difference if he had not been wearing a helmet!!;)

He died protesting about something he believed in ,wether we agree with his actions or not.
Condolances to his family and friends who probably knew better than us what his feelings were on the subject.

Although sometimes unfortunately it still happens.
On my very last day on the job, I had to attend a fatal RTA, a motorcyclist had come off his bike, and he had slid across the road, and under an HGV travelling in the opposite direction. I had, the worst thing I can remember having to do in 30yrs on the job, picking up the riders helmet…………………………………His head was still inside it, his body many yards away.
Then having to tell his family.

I have no sympathy for him, he choose not to wear the most crucial part of biker gear.

Ah,the Cosmic Joker strikes again ….

(If you don’t know what the Cosmic Joker is,you can look it up in Urban Dictionary, but for pity’s sake be careful where you look.I’ve learnt some things I really didn’t need to know in there.)

P.S. Poor chap 🙁
