Dash 7 and Dash 8

These two remarkable planes are from a long line of fine quallity products out of Canada, but what I’d like to know is, are they both operated side by side in any service?

London City Airways/Euro City Airways were a short-lived british Dash 7 operator.

At least one of their aircraft then went to British Midland.

I understand that the loss of the ABZ-Unst contract was the primary reason Brymon got rid of their Dash 7’s. Used to see them in ABZ all the time.

Many years ago, Brymon even took a Dash 7 into the local heliport (Longside) which has a 600 metre runway (only 450m useable). Quite different from the usual traffic of helicopters.

I went on a Dash 7 for the first and probably last time last year. Berjaya Air of Malaysia use them on routes to the islands. Pangkor airstrip is about 1500 ft long and the Dash 7 coped v well. It’s also the first time I’ve sat facing the rear of the aircraft!

They are also the only airline using the old KL airport – imagine Heathrow airport only being used by Air South West and you get the picture!

Air British Columbia operated both at one time – (late 80’s) as I was lucky enough to fly on one from Vancouver to Seattle.

Yes that’s the same argument I’ve been hearing in an article on Maritime surveilance planes, the Dash 7 Ranger was pitted against the BAe 748 Coastguarder and the Fokker F-27 Maritime both of these having the Dart engines and the D7 having four PT6-67’s

Brymon did operate both types together for a while. The 7 is a specialist short field performer with not enough airfields in the UK requiring its performance to warrant the cost of running 4 engines when the modern day competition perform so well on 2.

I dont think there are even any operators of the 7 in Europe anymore.

The last 7 operator here was probably Brymon, which I think operated a mixed fleet of 7’s and 8’s at one point.

Looks like they do lots of ad-hoc and long term charter work, the Dash 8 is working for the UN at the moment:

From the info I have from airlinerlist.com Voyageur Airways in Canada seem to be the only operator of both types still, with 6 Dash 7s, and 1 Dash 8.
