Hi all…
Can anybody here pinpoint a date/year when Black 6 may have undergone the extensive maintenance evident in these images of her at Duxford? I’m fairly sure that I took them between 1993-1996, but I’m not 100% sure. Many thanks in advance for any pointers… 🙂

I was under the impression that the aircraft were not open to the general public, but judging by some of the damage done to the aircraft while in the museum this is obviously not the case!
You are indeed right with the above comment, especially as there is still a hole in the fabric of one of the elevators where something was dropped on it. I had permission to get in the a/c for the pictures which are being used for the next Haynes manual. If you are who I think you are, quite a few of your pictures are going to be used.

🙂 Super image Augsburgeagle… I hadn’t realised that the RAFM opened her up from time to time or did you have special access? Also, any help with dates would be great too…

He hasn’t replied yet but hopefully he should tie it down, if you want any specific photos of anything just ask Peter, the Museum does not open the aircraft up.

The radiators were used after overhaul and are still fitted I believe. The pumps I am not sure about what happened to them.

Black 6. Donated components.
Back in the nineties when Black 6 was being operated we supplied the project with three unused DB606 fuel injection pumps and a pair of coolant radiators free of charge.
What became of these components, did they disappear into someones shed, were they sold or did they follow the airframe into the RAFM?
Anon.

I can’t remember the year, possibly end 1994, but she was repainted because the paint applied at Benson not very good and came off easily when she was flown in rain.

I’d say it was 1995, by the look of the Sea Hurricane in the background.

just out of interest, is her original engine currently in situ at hendon or has it been inhibited and crated?

Didn’t realise she had a total repaint! I knew that a few painting faux pas had been fixed but didn’t know it was a full repaint, I will ask my father for the exact date, hopefully he should remember!

Thanks for the feedback guys… to be 100% clear, the pics were taken by me at Duxford between circa 1993-1996 and would have been during the winter of these years when I working on the old Plane Sailing PBY-5A based there… I was just trying to firm up the date and I think Bradburger may be on the right lines 🙂

that is not Benson…..pretty sure that is the lovely Dux WW1 hangar and classic NO SMOKING sign. Fluffy will know more
Rare too see a no smoking notice being praised. About as rare as a totally original unrestored 109. 🙂

Didn’t she not have a repaint about 1994/95?
I remember reading an article by Russ Snadden, and seem to recall that he & the team took the opportunity to fix a few errors that had crept into the original scheme when they did a repaint.
Come to think of it, I do remember seeing footage on Steve Connors 109 DVD of the team paint stripping the aircraft at DX, with the wings and various other bits of it off, and this was shot well before the unfortunate accident.

Hmm,
Notice the MG’s in place, they were not installed untill the mid 90’s so it can’t be before first painting. Notice the stub blanks are well used aswell, I’m thinking post crash resto.
Agree with the post-crash restoration before going to Hendon theory.

Hmm,
I first thought benson 90 but the other aircraft make me think duxford so it must be post crash. Notice the MG’s in place, they were not installed untill the mid 90’s so it can’t be before first painting. Notice the stub blanks are well used aswell, I’m thinking post crash resto.
