A journalist’s POV…
If you report someone’s death, you’re basically obliged to report the cause of death. It’s just part of the story – nothing more, nothing less. I personally don’t see the need to overly exploit the somewhat less-than-ordinary cause of death beyond a normal obit, but the raunchier media without a doubt would.
In this case, I would have definately suggested ‘David Carradine dies by own hand’ for a headline here…
The tabloids here are promoting the fact that he was found wearing Womens underwear

“Freak home accident” is how sex-game deaths used to be reported.
Quite right too.I’d much rather believe he accidentally strangled himself hanging his socks on the line than know the honest truth. But the procedure was successful,so as my daughter and I exclaimed simultaneously,at least he died happy .

Totally agree. The chap’s dead, either way. Why not just say “David Carradine hangs himself” and leave it at that? Surely enough people will have seen Kill Bill (or Kung Fu) to know who he is, and that alone should generate sales?

The report of his death on the news website I looked at had some extremely explicit details of how he was found.I was discussing with my daughter,a journalism student, how hurtful and embarassing this must be for the poor chap’s family. Her view was that the editor has the last say,and his/her decision on what constitutes ” news ” is final, whatever the circumstances.I think there’s no need for the public to know that he died as a result of what’s politely known as ” an auto-erotic incident “.Any views on this ?
I’m sure Michael Hutchence’s family feel exactly the same way as the Carradine family. Your daughter is correct, editors do have the final say and having worked with plenty of them over the years I’ve yet to meet one with any form of integrity, scruples of sympathy. That I’m afraid is pretty much the state journalism is in these days…

Grasshopper should have been wise enough to know …you can’t commit suicide by hanging yourself by your todger!!!

Having been very close to a few news worthy items and read the subsequent press reports I now take most press reports very lightly.
Paul
Even easier for me. There are only two periods of my long life that I’ve bought a newspaper.
(1) 1973, I was following the World Cup Rally for a School Project, and the Mirror had a dedicated section in it.
(2) 1992ish, I needed the Weekend FT for the Economics section, it was part of my degree.
And that, is it. I’ve never bought a newspaper for news, ever.
I do buy our local weekly, but I don’t call that news, we are a small community, we know everything that goes on anyway!
The TV is not much better at lying. BBC news has sold out or dumbed itself down for a world audience.
ITN aims for “Impact” as the post above suggests.
BBC World service is very gentle, so as not to upset the expats.
CNN etc is just junk, only improved by the adverts.

An old pal of mine is a lecturer in media and photo journalism. Above his desk is a large printed banner with a simple motto: “IMPACT IMPACT IMPACT”

I’m trying to make a serious point here,Steve. There’s no need for me to know he made such an undignified exit .

Whilst I support your views, it is also the fault of the authorities. The reporters can only report what they have been told. (Also, what they have paid to be told by bent authorities). If they are told nothing they make it up…….then when they are wrong they are proved to be idiots and their reputation is nil.
The chase for a “Scoop” overides all sensitivity.
I hope you daughter becomes a journalist, and not “Scoop scum”.

It does, you have to wonder about that.
THAI coroners have completed an autopsy on the body of actor David Carradine, a day after the star of the TV show Kung Fu was found naked and hanging dead in his luxury Bangkok hotel room.
Coroners at Bangkok’s Chulalongkorn hospital said they had not yet determined the cause of the 72-year-old’s death and were waiting for the results of a toxicology screen.
“This certainly was not a natural cause of death,” the hospital’s chief coroner, Nantana Sirisap, said.
A maid found Carradine hanging naked by a rope in the closet of his hotel suite at the plush Swissotel Nai Lert Park hotel yesterday, police said.
Reports in UK tabloid papers claim the rope was also attached to his genitals.
Police said there was no indication other people had been in the room, where Carradine had stayed during the shooting of a film called Stretch.
Carradine, from a family of performers and the eldest son of character actor John Carradine, enjoyed a long career on Broadway, television and in movies such as director Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill and Kill Bill 2.
While some media reports speculated his death may have been a suicide, a spokeswoman said neither they nor his family believed Carradine was capable of killing himself.
“His family is in shock,” Tiffany Smith of Carradine’s management firm, said.
“They have the same belief we have. There was no way David did this to himself.”
Carradine wrote in his 1995 autobiography Endless Highway that he had tried to kill himself when he was five years old.
The book also documented his alcoholism and extensive use of drugs, from LSD to cocaine.
He was made most famous by his role in the US series Kung Fu where he played Kwai Chang Caine, a half-Asian martial arts specialist, which earned him an Emmy nomination.
The role of Caine led to parts in more than 200 productions and his turn as the villainous Bill in Tarantino’s Kill Bill movies led to his fourth Golden Globe nomination.
Carradine was married five times and had two daughters from previous marriages.
