David Croft, RIP

David Croft, co-writer of the comedy gem Dad’s Army, Is reported to have sadly died today at the age of 89. Croft and his writing partner Jimmy Perry were responsible for Dad’s Army as well as as string of other successful comedies.

Thanks for the laughs David. You leave behind so many unforgettable comedy quotes and such an amazing legacy of work that although you may be gone, you definately won’t be forgotten !

And to think that Dad’s Army was initially turned down as being offensive to and belittling the Home Guard!!

Where did you get that notion from? It’s simply not true. The BBC Head of Comedy Michael Mills commissioned it pretty much immediately, on the proviso that David Croft co-wrote it with creator Jimmy Perry as Jimmy had not previously written for television. I know Jimmy and knew David personally. Both are/were great men.

He and Jimmy Perry provided most of us with so much laughter for so many years. And to think that Dad’s Army was initially turned down as being offensive to and belittling the Home Guard!! The joy is that we have the DVDs as a permanent legacy.
