David Moore – Spitfire Pilot

At a BBQ over the weekend I bumped into the daughter of the late David Moore, pilot of Spitfire RM689 who was killed at the Woodford air-show accident in 1992. She is a friend of a close friend, as it turns out.

She had never met her father, but bizarrely I had. A strange experience for both of us.

Although she recalled seeing the accident on TV and in the newspapers at the time she had no idea that the pilot was her father, and only found out quite recently.

I wonder if anyone has memories of David (or better still any photographs) that they may be able to share with her?

Hi. I moved in to the village where David Moore lived on the day of his funeral, last weekends similar crash at Shoreham has prompted me to look in to what happened back in 1992. I got to know Davids widow Deana quite well, sadly she died in 2000. I find the first post a bit strange as his two children would have been about 10 and 12 I would guess when he died, I watched them grow up from a distance, a boy and a girl. Also I read on another thread that they were both at the airshow in 1992 when he died, I felt so sorry for all three of them – they were a lovely family from what I know. However maybe post traumatic stress has played a part in their lives to the extent that they do not remember – very sad. We regularly have vintage aircraft flying over the village, Horsley in Gloucestershire at low level I assume in memory of David Moore.

Thank you for all the posts and links.

Oddly, Mark12 and I were chatting over dinner in St. Omer some seven or eight years ago with the lead AAIB investigator for this accident.

There is a very nice picture of Mr. Moore in one of the ‘Spitfire – Living Legend’ books (by Jeremy Flack).

In one of them he’s standing with “Johnny” Johnson, I believe.

We were visiting Newark Museum and being shown around the cockpit of the Vulcan. The guy showing us around was talking about the crash .If i remember correctly his son-in – law was one of the pilots of the plane and they didn’t know for a while who it was that had been the pilot on that fateful day.

This is the AAIB report http://www.aaib.gov.uk/publications/bulletins/october_1992/spitfire_fxiv__g_algt.cfm

Very sad.

i was at that show as a young 9/10 year old boy, can still picture the last moments in my head of the spit going up into the loop and hitting the deck hard in a slight nose up attitude. made quite an impression at that age, but fortunately didn’t spoil my passion for aviation.

RIP David Moore.

I was there too, I will never ever forget the horrifying noise of the impact as long as I live

My recollections of David go back to around 1989-onwards.
In the days before the Internet was around in it’s present form, there was Prestel and Micronet., with very slow and relatively
expensive phone connections.
A couple of chaps (one being a London tube train driver, and the other a cheese wholesaler) set up a group called
“Direct Line”. This was way before the Insurance company was around.

They would arrange meets (normally around the M25 area), where a room in a pub would be hired, and like minded people would get together and talk computers, as well as “exchanging” software. The actor Lew Lewis was often there (of “Brush strokes” and Robin Hood fame”). David Moore was usually there too, and I remember having a few chats with him about the Spitfire he flew. On one occasion he was showing us a video of him flying in formation with Norwegian F-16s. Very nice chap and sadly missed.

On one of the last meets I went to, they were selling off some of his computer gear on behalf of his wife. I still have one of
the games I bought.

RM689 is currently in store at East Midlands Airport, the extensive restoration having been halted before the closure of Bristol Filton.

RM689 was a participator in the BoB film but I have no record of Dave Moore being a pilot in the film.

Thank you Mark12. I know she will be pleased to see that!

She also asks about the current status of RM689. I don’t have a copy (yet) of Vol 2. Any update I can give her?

She believes her father flew a Spitfire during the BofB filming? Is this correct? I suspect she may be getting muddled with the inclusion of Spitfire RM689, which I think was a participant?
