Day 3 of 5 Part 1
Day 1 – Northolt Here
Day 2 – Duxford Here
My brother picked me up Saturday morning from my parent’s house in Doncaster and we headed north to Church Fenton with a possible promise of seeing Jet Provest/Strikemaster, Chipmunk and a Harvard flying. As with the best-laid plans, events conspired against this happening. The jets were still at North Weald for servicing but the Chipmunk flew in and the Harvard managed one flight before the port oleo leg burst a seal and curtailed all flying. Although we were at the end of the runway, not under it, we did get a visit from Airfield Security ‘suggesting’ we should move to the viewing area as it was safer there, which we did but moved back to the end of the runway again when the Harvard went flying.
I think the haze must have followed me up from Duxford.

Yes it is
I seem to remember photos of that one from way back when, at the time it was silver with squadron codes G T6. Owned by someone in the Derby area I think.
Yep, here it is.

Ah, phew, thats better! WD390 is a lovely aircraft, one of the owners was kind enough to show me around her a little while ago, she really is immaculate. Great photos all round. Top work. 😀 😎

Yes it is
This was once based at Breighton, the then owner also used to have a Chipmunk and could often be seen taking his young ‘un aloft in either – ah to have such parentage!

What is the situation at Church Fenton now as there was a Dak based there not long back aswell.
I thought the base was still RAF, are there private companys based there aswell.
Paddy Green’s Dakota was repainted at CF in hangar 3 which is not currently used by the RAF, the same hangar in which the JP’s, Strikemaster and T-6 are currently housed. I believe the Dak’ is based at Liverpool. Taff Smith also used to keep his L-39 at Church Fenton many years ago in hangar 1 alongside the Tucano stores so housing privately owned aircraft there is no new thing.
The RAF are still very much in evidence at Fenton with 1FTS using the runways during the week (a Cranwell based King Air is currently doing circuits and bumps as I type and a couple of Lynx helicopters have flown over this afternoon). Resident units are:
3 Squadron of No. 1 Elementary Flying Training School, Yorkshire Universities Air Squadron and No. 9 A.E.F. all of whom share a common pool of Grob Tutors.

it is possible to base civil aircraft at RAF locations, insurance is needed and the co operation of the C.O.

Is this one still at Sandtoft ?
Is there anything else interesting there since the big clear out.

Second thoughts on the price maybe – it did seem strangely cheap! Hence my immediate phonecall!

Correct me if I am wrong, but that Harvard very recently was advertised for sale, almost immediately I contacted the vendor to be told that it had been withdrawn – any ideas why out there?

Thanks Stringbag. I’m currently searching more info about the airworthy strikemasters in the UK. Great input!:)

Hi Brian,
Always nice to see a a good old Harvard. Which strikemaster did you hope to see at Church Fenton? Any ID or pics about that one?
