Day of Russian Navy in Sevastopol – photoreport

День Военно-Морского Флота России 2004

Not the usual stuff you get to see everyday
Ka-27PS, Ka-27PL, Su-24, Su-24MR, Be-12, Su-25UTG, Su-27K, Ukrainian and Russian Mi-8MTVs

Too bad only vessels and aircraft from Chernomorskaya Flota (Black Seat Fleet) participated, but that was to expect.. Wonder how many early Fencers are still kept in service

Thanks GDL. Makes one wonder why it hasn’t replaced the MR-800 on other vessels such as the Slava and Kirov classes. It appears to be very common on large Russian surface combatants, even recent ones.

Were there any technical difficulties with this design reported, or is it simply lack of money?

Indeed one wonders. But maybe it was tech problem, perhaps money? I checked my Janes sources and the ‘TOP SAIL’ is actually the MR-600. I think the ‘FLAT SCREEN’ on the Kerch could be the MR-800, not 100% sure.
The MR-700 is apparently the early Fregat-series ‘TOP STEER’ unit which is fitted to two of the SLAVA class CGs and at least two of the KIROV class CGs. The first three SOVREMENNY class DDGs were also fitted with MR-700, but the rest have MR-760 ‘TOP PLATE’.

The SLAVA and KIROV classes have both ‘TOP PAIR’ and ‘TOP STEER’/’TOP PLATE’ sets fitted. The ‘TOP PAIR’ is the ‘TOP SAIL’ combined with the ‘BIG NET’. Both the KIROV and SLAVA classes play a larger anti-air role which is probably why they have a far more comprehensive surveillance radar suite.

Hope this helps, and doesn’t confuse you to bits….

Why is the Kashin equipped with Uran SSMs when the Neustrashimiy still hasn’t recieved this armament?

Good question Vympel. One wonders….

Perhaps when the Neustrashimiy goes into it’s own refit, then maybe?

What’s the huge search radar antenna on #713? I don’t think this device is standard equipment for Kara-class destroyers.

Trident,

The Kerch is the only ship fitted with it, and so you are right, it’s not standard. It is the MR-700 Podberyyozovik-E 3D EW/surveillance radar (dubbed ‘FLAT SCREEN’ by NATO). The Kerch had it fitted during a late 80’s overhaul, and it replaces the standard MR-800 Voskhod (NATO: TOP SAIL) radar.

Good to see they still have a good number of surface ships active in the Black Sea.

From the photos I indentified the following:

#810 Smetlivyy – a 35 year old KASHIN-class DDG. Fitted with Uran SSMs too!

#U130 KRIVAK III-class – The Ukrainian Navy was there too it would seem. This is the Hetman Sahaydachniy and was taken over by the Ukraine after the collapse of the USSR.

#121 SLAVA-class CG Moskva. Really great to see that still have at least two left, the other is Varyag in the PACFLT. She is the original hull commisioned back in 1983.

#U402 ROPUCHA-I-class LST – The Ukrainian Konstyantyn Olshanskyy.

#156 ROPUCHA-I-class LST – Not sure what the name is now.

#158 ROPUCHA-I-class LST – Not sure of the name.

#616 A very colourful DERGACH-class (Project 1239) surface effect ship armed with SS-N-22s. This one is the Samum and was supposed to have been transfered to the Baltic fleet. I guess it never went. Interesting to see the old Soviet Fleet flag flying!

#615 DERGACH-class again. The original this time. The Bora.

#620 NANUCHKA-III-class corvette.

#952 TARANTUL-III-class guided missile patrol craft.

Great collection of shots, and it might only be the Black Sea fleet but hey we don’t see much of it anyway, so it’s good enough for me. 🙂

A cool, I thought it was the new training destroyer. In which the firing of the gun is simulated by a soldier saying : “Bumm” for every shot and the rockets are replaced by firework rockets to simulate the launch of an ASM. 😀
