Db-605 Family Engine Badges.

While doing some designs for a Db605 static project Ive seen a lot of photos online of restored engines with badges on the crankshaft blank plate. Is that a modern theme or originally were they just a blank plate?

From my knowledge of Mercedes auto history, I’m a bit surprised the engines would wear a “Mercedes Benz” plate.
I would have thought it would have been a Daimler Benz plate, as aero engines were usually called Daimlers as in DB605.
“Mercedes” was a trade name for the automobile and truck divisions of the group.

How sure are we that the Mercedes badge shown above is correct?

That’s pretty fascinating, didn’t realise that Henschel and Man built these engines as well. Can anyone recommend some reading on these engines, that is if anything has been published? Thanks

A photo from Matthias Dorst via MeierMotors of the Trollhättan Flygmotor Sverige (Volvo in Sweden) license-built DB-605 that was used in the Bf-109 delivered to the Military Aviation Museum, Virginia Beach. Sweden built and used DB-605s in a few early post-war aircraft.

If it helps, I have hundreds of Luftwaffe technical/instructional slides and I think there is a set on the DB.605.

Do you have them?

Only the manuals they have online.Very good for technical info but not much good for plans..

Also, if the engine was licence-built it would have, say, a Henschel or MAN enamelled badge. They are always stamped with the engine number.

Thanks Andy.Im finding that with parts as well such as the oil filler/breather on the top plate.Different versions, some cast, some sheetmetal, different shapes etc..

Sometimes, there was no badge. Just a blanking plate.

I used to have examples of all three of the badges mentioned, but now only have Mercedes Benz ones.

Lovely pics and info, thanks guys..I think the Damilar/Mercedes thing threw me as a modern addon not a ridgy didge article..The early sports cars shared the same badge to the engines.

1190 at Duxford has a lorry badge fitted which is actually quite similar to the real type. Often they have the engine number on the reverse. I’ll post a pic of two real ones

Pratt and Whitney, BMW, Daimler-Benz, and I believe Junkers and others all had those unique enameled brass engine emblems. They were often removed for souvenirs. They turn up on Ebay now and then but I have never seen any from the German engines available.
