I just entered the number on the bottom of one of the pistons into Google & the only hits I got were for Briggs & Stratton head gaskets ๐Ÿ™

Briggs and Stratton, Lawnmower engines used for aircraft? no wonder we cleared the skies in the B of B.

…did you mean MY piston…

Good morning. Yes, I was wondering.

I’ve had a rummage around in my garage and have found two other American radial pistons that I can’t positively identify. Both are something like 5.75 inches in diameter and are of broadly similar design but with significant differences. Iโ€™ll post some photographs later.

Here is one of the unknown radial pistons. It has a diameter of 5.735 inches (5.75 nominal) and has an unusual domed crown; the domed part only about two-thirds of the diameter of the piston and rising out of an otherwise flat top.

Hi ZRX 61. Thanks for the advice. I have sent them an email today.

Emailed them yesterday, but nothing received back as yet, just a small fish in a large pond no doubt.

Can you do a quick measurement of the diameter of your piston?

Morning C.D. did you mean MY piston or the other members?.

Can you do a quick measurement of the diameter of your piston?

It’s a hair over 5.7in, so it’s either 1340, 2800 or 4360..

If you want radial engines parts (AND have the part #….) This warehouse is like that scene at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark.. but it’s ALL engines & parts… & 99% of it is NOS… I’m like a kid in a candy store when I go there..

If you don’t have the part # you could just say “I need a set of knackered rings for an R1830 piston please! whatcha got?”

…your R1830, which is exactly the same as mine…

Hi ZRX61. Thanks for the pfoto of your R1830, which is exactly the same as mine. Now, as regards those piston rings……..
Lincoln 7

It appears to be a flat topped R2800 piston judging by the size.

Bore/stroke sizes:

R1340: 5.75in x 5.75in

R1820: 6.125in x 6.875in

R1830: 5.5in x 5.5in

R2800 & R4360: 5.75 x 6.00in

I’m totally confused now…..is this an R-1830 piston?

I have no idea, lemme measure it…

ok, it’s about 5.7in so it’s probably another R2800 piston

Hi ZRX61.
Have you a photo of the inside of the flat top piston please.
Thanks.

DC3 Piston rings

I think the flat topped one is an R-1830 piston so it should be the same as the inside as the R-1830 photograph that I posted (which is also flat topped but Iโ€™ll admit it doesnโ€™t look it because of the way I took the photograph).

There are some differences with my R-1830 piston such as the ring-groove spacing and the bottom of the skirt being slightly longer on the thrust faces (mine is flat all round). I think Iโ€™m right in saying that not all the pistons in a single R-1830 are the same; the pistons on the master rods are different…..maybe?

An R-1830 piston is one of the smaller โ€˜bigโ€™ ()American radial piston engines with a nominal bore of 5.5 inches (measured my piston at 5.4770 inches) but of course there are 14 cylinders to the 9 cylinders of the R-1820.

Iโ€™m sure you know this but the โ€˜1830โ€™ refers to the engines capacity in cubic-inches and the โ€˜Rโ€™ for radial; this being a common naming system for all American aero-engines of the period.

No, C.D. I must honestly say I didn’t know. I tried all the links you gave me re Ebay, buttheseller has not a complete set, however he has put me in touch with another chap who may be able to help, providing I can get the part numbers for the rings???
