Does anyone happen to know an accurate colour match for what is often colloquially termed ‘de Havilland Blue’? The engines on display at the Stag Lane and latterly Leavesden showrooms (and now scattered between Salisbury Hall, RRHT Derby and RRHT Bristol) were all painted in this French blue-like hue and I’ve saw Vintech restoring some engines in the same colour when I visited a few years ago.
Any help gratefully received.

I have two Gipsy III engines painted blue, one being the engine you saw at Vintech and a unrestored unit. Give Mike or Paul a call at Vintech and get the spec etc.

P.S
The Gipsy III in G-AAZP is the same blue.
MDS – I spoke to MV but unfortunately all he could advise was that the paint was matched locally; no specific ref for it.

Donk is short for Donkey, as in animal to pull your cart, or in this case your kite, along. 🙂
Some ADC Cirrus engines were painted blue also.
My ADC isn’t painted for the W/W, and the Gipsy one in the DH60G was grey and is still grey……

DH donks were all normally painted black before the war. During the war many were green. After the war, they went back to black for a time. Then, and into HS days, they became grey. I’ve always presumed the odd colours used on some display donks were just for display only.
If you want an accurate ‘DH’ blue (The pale shade used in their literature.), you can do little better than get hold of an old original DH enamel badge, as these never fade.

Sounds like the colour DH60 Cirrus Moth, G-EBLV, at Old Warden is painted in? Suggest go along with a colour fan swatch and compare it?

Some slight confusion here. Azure Blue is one colour, PRU Blue another, and somewhat greyer. The prewar colour used by Sydney Cotton was what became RAF color Sky, or duck egg blue, and a lot lighter. The PRU had a free hand to experiment with colours and the darker PRU Blue was indeed developed when Sidney Cotton was with this unit, but not prewar.

This may be photo reconaissance blue (azure blue RAAF). A Sid Cotton (sidcot flying suit) innovation immediately pre war was an all over eggshell blue that he observed made his aircraft very difficult to spot. This scheme was adopted for PR Spitfires under Cottons direction and I understand later to PR Mosquitos.
