De Havilland Heron with Fixed Undercarriage?

Hi all,

can anyone explain these pictures? Is it the first prototype and the final undercarriage configuration not yet finally found or installed?

Thank you for every answer!

Regards, RT

You are welcome! I’m pleased that I still have the slide. The Portsmouth Aero Club hangar and clubhouse are visible in the background.

Thank you, Oracal! Somewhere way in the background is the Plessey Flying Club, probably with little 9 year old me and Dad preflighting Condor ‘WFO.  Now to dig out some pictures from the garage….

Fargo Boyle.

A two-for-one deal… JFA Twin Pin and a DH Heron series 1 at Portsmouth airport circa 1969 or 1970.

I believe this aircraft eventually wound up in Western Australia. In the 1980s I saw it at Jandakot Airport. It became a part of the West Australian Museum of Aviation along with a Dove. That collection dissolved. Last I heard the RAAFA museum took it in but I am not sure of the status.

Was it JF and not Channel? How time flies.

The ATC guy was always happy to allow visitors to the tower. I may well have a photo of one of the Twin Pins..

JF Airlines at Portsmouth operated Heron 1 G-ANNO in the early 70’s, and 2 Twin Pins (PHY and PHX), one red and one yellow. Took them for granted at the time, wish now I’d taken some photos…

I too remember the Heron I and IA from my ‘yuf’ plying their trade from Portsmouth with Channel Airways. Sometimes they used a red Twin Pin (leased-in?) or a DC 3. Replaced by HS 748 which they managed to overrun the Portsmouth runway twice in one day!

Wikipedia has for once correct details recorded.

My first ever flight was in a fixed gear Heron Mk1 – circa 1960 with North – South Airlines from Exeter to Yeadon,me complete with ‘stand at ease shorts’ 🙂

Well, it looks like I did not read Wikipedia that carefully. Thank you Oracal.

All Heron series 1 and 1A had fixed gear.
