De Havilland Moth Club Vintage Air Tour.

Hi all. I think most of you will have seen this in the news section of the latest Flypast, but for those who have not.

August 15-17

44 de Havilland aircraft including Dragon, Dragonfly, Hornet, Leopard, Puss and Tiger Moths.

Sywell, Bidford, Cosford, Hucknall, Sherburn in Elmet ( I will be there) Eddsfield, Pocklington, East Kirkby, Sywell, Shenington, White Waltham.

Nice to see Yorkshire getting its fair share.

Any one here involved or visiting any of the stops.

Ben

As anyone who was watching will testify, the real challenge was East Kirkby where there was a 20 knot wind right across the main length of the landing site. It led to a few entertaning arrivals and departures, thankfully without damage.

There were plenty of big lenses about, look forward to seeing any results!

I was one of those photographers, in hi-viz vests, out on the airfield at East Kirkby and there were a few sharp intakes of breath at some of the interesting arrival techniques. Hope to have pictures from the day posted tomorrow.

Most overflew but the Dragon captain took the trouble to do a low pass and give a vigorous wave to those below.

That would be Henry Labouchere then! 😉

It’s a shame all tour members couldn’t land at Bidford as it’s such a timeless setting …but just for record, here’s a picture I took of ‘HIZ from Cambridge sharing the grass at Bidford with based “Weary Willie” – I believe ‘NFM dropped in later. Most overflew but the Dragon captain took the trouble to do a low pass and give a vigorous wave to those below. I’ve done marshalling at one of the Moth Club tours and the relaxed atmosphere is great to share in – glad the rest of the tour happened.

Notes from a Tourist

Surprisingly given the weather forecasts (not to mention the blustery winds on Saturday!), about a dozen aeroplanes got around the entire three-day route.

Sadly flooding after overnight rain meant that we couldn’t land at Bidford, although a couple of Tiger Moths hadn’t got the message and apparently created impressive bow-waves!

Sorry BenyBoy. We must have missed you by minutes as we touched down at Sherburn at about quarter to the hour!

As anyone who was watching will testify, the real challenge was East Kirkby where there was a 20 knot wind right across the main length of the landing site. It led to a few entertaning arrivals and departures, thankfully without damage.

A few snaps from a small camera. There were plenty of big lenses about, look forward to seeing any results!

Not a Moth, but The Blue Max celebrated by getting the Aeronca 100 running for the first time in about 35 years!

Friday morning. Perfect visibility after overnight storms had passed.

We tried hard, but could never get the camera to focus on our ‘rainbow’ and shadow….

Proof for Benyboy. We DID get to Sherburn!!

I was at Hucknall yesterday. We had the Dragon, Dragonfly, two hornets, three Leopards a Chipmunk, ten Tigers a Cub and a Cessna120. With a poor next day forecast Stuart Mckay (and Desmond Penrose) flew back to Henlow the others headed north around 1630hrs.

Expect to see Turbulents, Lightning, Hurricanes, Tempest, Typhoons this weekend, according to the BBC weather forecast:(

Yet ANOTHER terrible weekend weather forecast, which is far from Moth-friendly unfortunately. You will need industrial-sized Mothballs to fly in that wind!

Still, fingers crossed, hopefully will be better than predicted.

You buying? :D:D:D

Oh, but I’d have to drive home afterwards 😡

Much as I would like to be at Sywell Bidford is much nearer and the photographic opportunities greater.

Pre-departure briefing at Sywell is scheduled for 09.00 local. I guess departures will commence from around 09.30

Most arrivals at Bidford will therefore be around 10.30 to 11.30

Cosford 13.00 -ish weather permitting. Then Hucknall and Sherburn thereafter

Same on Saturday. 09.30-ish departure from Sherburn, then routing via Eddsfield (private strip), Pocklington and East Kirkby. Arriving back at Sywell around 18.00

Sunday is again 09.30 departure via Shenington gliding site at about 11.00 and finishing at White Waltham late afternoon.

Hope to see some forumites en-route. I’ve signed on as “self loading baggage” in Hornet Moth G-ADKC!

I’ll try and get to Bidford (my nearest) – it’ll be a bit crowded if they all land there together 🙂

I wonder if, en route Bidford to Cosford, they will fly over Nuneaton? Sir Geoffrey grew up there – was he born there or elsewhere?

Roger Smith.
