de Havilland Sea Vixen

It is very sad that there appears to have been a complete absence this year of the Sea Vixen (XP 924).

If by chance she has been displayed, anyone got any pictures please?

Must be the Vulcan effect getting all the sponsorship.

Any news gratefully received.

Airtest, are you sure? I thought it had only done fast taxies so far this year.
I can’t recall where I was on the 10th, but I can honestly say I didn’t see (or hear) it flying.

The weather looks poor in the photos too. I thought the Vixen could only fly under VFR.
Do you have any take-off or landing shots from the day at all?

Will agree that the drop tanks look good though. Looks more ‘complete’ so to speak.

Thanks Uzzy, glad to see that she is still around. She looks so much better with Drop Tanks.

I last worked on her 40 years ago on HMS Eagle but she still makes me feel a wave of nostalgia. Wish I had enough money to keep her going.

Thanks again, much obliged.

I agree – the drop tanks look great!

Who is flying the Vixen on the airtest – Dan Griffiths?

Good to see it is getting some air under it’s wings – here’s hoping it’s back on the circuit again next year.

I happened to overhear a conversation between a display pilot at Yeovilton (or Culdrose) and someone closer to the Sea Vixen’s operations, that he was available to fly her as he has experience of the type and would only need to renew his approval rating.

So there are SV pilots around with the necessary skills, it’s a matter of finding them.

I think you’ll find it is down to the fact that there isn’t anyone available to fly the beast at the moment.

Hopefully that’ll be rectified for the 2011 display season, but please don’t read that as ‘inside info’ – it isn’t!
