The mount is similar to the type found in FN turrets.

I was a bit suspicious of the ‘mounting’ under the gun and the ‘flash hider’ too; is that why it cannot be from a Spitfire?

A Browning, but not off a Spit. I’m surprised it hasn’t been pulled by ebay yet.

Hello Gentlemen,
Thank you all who have assisted with my question whilst I have been away, so much help, information and from Peter Catchpole some inspiration, how did you know the idea I had in mind?
I had the idea of using a few of my friends .303 aircraft browning machine gun mountings from a spitfire that he has not has use for at present to build up a small presentation whilst at the same time building up my engineering skills.
Did not realise how rare they were when I asked the question however now I have learned so much about these weapons and got a few interesting leads, btw TonyT was not seeking a Lee Enfield but my step son is now so thank you to all who passed that info on to us.

I was told many years ago by a now defunct deactivation company that the greeks are supposed to have a lot of these stored away?….i suppose if they ever came on the uk market as deacs they would probably be welded up solid under current policy….eg ruined in my opinion…..just my opinion………

Vampire twenty’s
They were a short barrel version in the Vampire aircraft weren’t they, Mike? There must have been hundreds around at one time as even T.11’s had them fitted.
I presume that that version was particular to the Vampire then and not used in other types. I know the Sea Hawk had full length twenty mils as did the Meteor.
Anon.

Thanks but I think there might be one or two objections if I stuff four serviceable 20 mm cannons under the Vampire. The neighbors might get a bit twitchy !!!!!!

I know where one is, but it still works 🙂
Actually there might be more than one… all the guns on display at Wright-Patt museum work 🙂

Peter I wasn’t having a pop at you, I genuinely thought the original poster was after a lee Enfield, hence my post showing him some available. Welcome to the forums BTW.
many apologies for getting the wrong end again!

I can remember in the Army we had them on top of Ferret armoured cars, they were considered a ‘piece of Junk’ and spent all their life wrapped up in clear plastic and tape!

Hi, After a quick search i have found 3 x deactivated Browning 303 wing mounted guns for sale on Spitfire spares website. It’s showing that they are still available at the moment. Hope this helps, Scott.

I’m cracking up thought he said Lee Enfield
glad it has caused amusement for you, lets see what you’d get up to after seven years of chemo-therapy, two stem cell transplants and a few scraps with the grim reaper.

Some here

I couldn’t see any listed there….?
De-act .303 Brownings are quite rare.
In many years going to fairs and W&P etc., since the early 1990’s, I’m stuggling to think of many occasions I’ve seen a de-act .303 Browning MG for sale.
