India has come out with a requirement of 8 Long range MPA. This requirement can conceivably go upto around 20-50 Aircrafts as and when IL-38 and Tu-142 are progressively retired.
Interestingly there are hardly any offerings. The aircrafts being talked about are:-
P3 old airframes which does not excite IN
P8 which will come in 2015 or so with complicated US strings
Tu-142 and IL-38 which are again old frames and it seems that IN does not want Russian sensors
Atlantique and Nimrod which are again old airframes.
I am wondering as to why both Russians and Europe is not thinking of new MPA platforms?
Europe with sensors and weapons mounted on A-400 or a modified A-320? Their ATR-42/72 has been a reasonable success and Nimrod and Atlantique will have to retired some time.
Or Russian with sensors and weapons mounted on IL-76 or even Tu-330, 204 or An-70 etc?
Even Israel can try the Phalcon route with its sensors mounted on a new long range Platform!
So in the coming decade with P8 be the only long range heavy MPA?
