I was in two minds whether to post this or not, but I felt I had to say something.
Whenever someone in the media passes away, there are always the stock comments of.
“If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything”
“Don’t speak ill of the dead” etc, etc.
Usually by fans of the deceased person, whether it be someone from TV, a singer or actor.
I have never subscribed to this school of thought. If I make a negative comment on someone it
is based on fact not rumour, and very often based on comments that person has made themselves.
There may be some who are uncomfortable with the fact that their “hero” had a darker side, or something
they themselves were not proud of, but that’s the way of the world.
No doubt many will disagree with me. (There is no need to name names)

Cliff Michelmore was a member of the 32nd entry of the Aircraft Apprentice Scheme at No. 1 School of Technical Training RAF which was located at RAF Halton. He was a squadron leader in the Royal Air Force during World War II. Still who cares about anyones war record on the BBC?

Watching the news on BBC and Sky earlier, there wasn’t a mention of Cliff Michelmore.
I would guess that a large proportion of those at the BBC now, have never heard of him.

No idea if that classes him as a celebrity though.
Thereby hangs a separate thread. Distinguished and pre-eminent individuals, to my mind, are not personalities or celebrities. Celebrity implies ephemeral and of course the modern media spawn celebrity like frogs. By turns irritating and amusing and forgettable they invade our lives for a while and then are gone.
Sir Ken Adam was without any doubt a distinguished pre-eminent individual, not a celebrity or a personality.

Didn’t know Paul Daniels had died.
Sir Ken Adam died a week ago. A German Jew and the first German citizen to fly in fighters in the RAF – Joined 609 Squadron on Typhoons in October 1943 and stayed with them through D-Day and into Germany. His first op was an escort where the CO, Pat Thornton-Brown was shot down by P47’s. Later he won two Oscars (Barry Lyndon, Madness of King George) for Production Design, worked on a bunch of Bond films, Dr Strangelove, designed Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Thoroughly pleasant chap on the occasions I met him and incredibly highly regarded for his film work. No idea if that classes him as a celebrity though.

He was 96 although Jean died many years ago I think. A gentleman in every sense of the word.

Strewth, I thought Cliff Michelmore died years ago.
I remember him first from “Two Way Family Favourites”, with his wife Jean Metcalfe.
Then on the Tonight programme, and Holiday series.

Indeed Alan – and I think his fans liked him almost as much as he did……
I have been surprised not to have seen Cliff Michelmore’s name appear here or in historic following his service as Sq/Ldr in the RAF during the war. An excellent broadcaster on radio and television and set a standard which many, although not all, have lived up to.

Self-opinionated, vitriolic, jingoistic, unsubstantiated, provocative, argumentative, overbearing…can’t recall seeing balanced discussion in here for many a year and to be honest most discussions held here are facile.
Not claiming personal superiority or innocence as I rather enjoy occasional observation of car crashes.

Forums are in decline generally. You have to give them your email address, think up a user name, fill out a captcha and then wait patiently for an email with a new link if your account is ‘approved’ by a moderator? What a convoluted workflow, when you are competing with Facebook, Twitter et al for members and content.
This forum seems somewhat infamous. I’ve stumbled upon posts on other websites from ex members. There must be a reason so many valued posters have left over the years! Perhaps we should take a look at who is left. 😎

A brilliant musician – as comfortable on a Hammond organ or his monolithic Moog Modular prog-rocking away, to the other end of the musical spectrum playing classical music through to honky tonk – sometimes in the same track!
Pictures At An Exhibition and Brain Salad Surgery (listening as I type…) are probably the two most played in my collection along with his work with The Nice.

Snafu, we have a separate mod forum, where we very often debate contentious threads. Although you will often see one moderator closing a thread, it is usually a joint decision, unless the thread or posts in question are obviously rude or defamatory.
It is rare indeed that Key management would question our decision in any case, though the webmaster can and does join our discussions on occasion.
