Today it is announced that almost the entire Deelen Airfield will become a Dutch National Monument. Deelen was build by the Germans during 1940-1944 and used as a night fighter base. Many of the original buildings survive. Camouflage was state-of-the-art: hangars looked like farm buildings. Although still a military base, Deelen Airfield is no longer active. The main runway is out of order. A couple of gliding clubs use this airfield now as their home.

I remember that they laid the groundwork in the sheetmetal shop, for the Fokker DXXI replica, and had a Finnish frame as the template. This was in 1986. Also the old revetments on a old taxi track are still visible on the public road just outside the base on the Schaarsbergen side.
Also the huge Diogenes bunker is still there, in use as a govermental depot and archive, i think they have the national archive from mental diseases hospitals there.

Deelen Airfield Museum
Great Pictures, would you know if they happen to have any photos regards JU88s of 4/KG6 based there around March of 1943 ?.
Been there today. I found only one JU88 picture on display. Not from a specific Deelen based aircraft. For more information it might be better to contact the museum by e-mail.
The fuselage section of the Stirling remains a very impressive artefact.

Deelen Airfield National Monument
Believe there is a really good museum there as well.
Have always been interested in Deelen as there is a memorial here just outside Edinburgh to the memory of 4 German airmen who were killed when there JU88 (from 4/KG6),crashed into a hill side, they set out from Deelen on the evening of the 24th March 1943.
