Just wondering recently, and I am sure once I get hold of the right book I will know this. On various Luftwaffe fighters late in the war there were Defence of the Reich fuselage bands. They varied in colour and size, but why? Were they just individual markings or unit connected?
Some examples below; a Ta-152, a Fw-190D, and another Ta-152.
