Defence spending and resulting assets

I’ve just taken this from BBC news;

http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm203/j_s14a/8883c460.jpg

I realise that there will be some huge sweeping assumptions and estimations here, but the amount we spend for what we actually have seems ludicrous in comparison to the other nations!

Is there any truth in these figures at all?

[QUOTE=TonyT;1842716]To late they are already here, it is called invasion by immigration, why bother fighting a war when you can simply move to the country and take it over by peaceful means…

Never a truer word has been spoken, in Boston, Lincs, 1 in 5 is from Poland/ Ukrania,Lithuania, etc, etc, so your right:(

In addition to what others have said, it’s cheaper to produce things in those countries. If the UK spent $30 billion on $30 million fighters it could have quite a few of them too!

Al, I could not agree more with your post. I think the only way we could defend this country from being overrun and defeated would be to go nuclear from the outset. I can’t think who would want to invade us though.

i know i was trained on them with L.A.D R.A.attatched to R.E.M.E. but unfortunately enemies have an habit of firing back and if you only have one missile against 3 tanks and two aircraft there’s only ever going to be one outcome no matter how well trained we shout out we are !!

in reality if anyone realy did want to invade ( doubtful ) it would be an extremely short affair without the us

we may as well try fighting a tank with a spud gun !!

our only hope would be to hold them off till america arrived …..late again !!

Just taking one item. The Main Battle Tank. I believe most of ours are mothballed now as they are a hangover from a previous centuries thinking. I feel(and coming from an ex soldier) they are dinosaurs and are completely vulnerable to a variety of air and ground launched systems. The days of fighting a tank war has gone and so should the tank.

Over the last 30 years or so the UK MoD has squandered billions on escalated or cancelled projects, fatally flawed designs, and politics-based procurement. Lately it has looked like the MoD and BAE shouldn’t be trusted to even put a battery in a torch.

Yet, the governments still send the armed forces to many far-flung bits of the planet to act like global enforcers, while at the same time cutting their budgets and assets. This is where most of the budget goes, instead of actually protecting this maritime nation and its surrounding seas.

For all the huge amounts of money spent, in a war of attrition the UK’s days would be numbered in weeks, if not days. An awful lot of hope seems to be pinned on those 11 subs…

You have to remember though that a British soldier (any western soldier really) is paid a whole lot more then a soldier in China, India or Russia. Therefor the Chinese, Indians and the Russians can spend a greater share of their overall budget on buying/developing equipment. Next to that are secondary expenses that are taken for granted here and laughed at in other countries. I would imagine the barracks in the UK to be more pleasant then those in China, same for medical treatment, but also the over-all level of training.

And that’s even before the military operations overseas are added in the mix.

That’s not to say there ain’t a whole lot of waste in the defence department of the UK. Or any western nation for that matter.

Even the US seems to get better VFM than us, though i suppose economies of scale will have some impact.

Given the blatant corruption in arms procurement in the US, it does make you wonder what is going on over here 🙂

It is one reason why we would never go to was against any of these countries, we no longer have sufficient military manpower to guard all the prisoners. :p
