DEFIANT BOOKS

Hi
I think I have posted this before but NOT on this site. Does anyone have the names of any GOOD book about the FIRST HAND STORIES about the Crews (Air Or Ground) who flew or worked on these aircraft in the 30s and 40s.
Thanks in advance for any help/ replies.

I’d back up the posts above, and Mark’s MMP book looks good on the Defiant overall, but isn’t built around crew accounts.

There’s actually quite a few recordings of ex-Defiant crews at the IWM sound archive. (Lambeth) It’s catalogued online, but you need to visit to listen to them, or (I think) you can order copies. It’s part of a big effort the IWM put into in oral history in the 80s and 90s, and is, IMHO one of the most under-used goldmines around.

In my opinion, Spit, it’s worth a visit to London for.

HTH.

For the Battle of Britain, the Then & Now book by After the Battle has many quotes direct from the ORB entries of the time.
A good general one is Defiant – The True Story, by the late John A Chambers, a former BP worker who got to know a fair number of surviving crew members whose stories he used throughout his book. This was published in 1997, unsure if its available now but the details are: ISBN 1 901405 11 7.

I’m currently working on an extended bibliography for the Defiant which I’ll put up on www.boultonpaul.com to accompany the forthcoming book Mike has mentioned.
