Defiant

So as with the Bf-110 fairly recently I again became interested in the Defiant owing to a small booklet I bought that covers the types brief career in the day-fighter role. It’s from a series called “Allied Wings” and while only around 50 pages, I found some interesting information within such as victory claims and pilot reports of a few engagements.

I can’t really explain it, but I find the Defiant a very interesting topic and though it is mostly known for its lack of success in the day-fighter mission, I can’t help but like it. From its clean lines (even with the turret, I find it a pleasing airplane to look at), to is unconventional layout to the wide variety of mission types that the RAF employed it in, it’s just an airplane that I can’t help but be fascinated with.

I’m not sure if others are familiar with this series, but the booklet I got was titled as “Part 1” which leads me to conclude that perhaps a “Part 2” will be pulished covering the night-fighter portion of its career…at least I hope so.

All in all if you are looking for a very brief yet informative read on this rather unique warplane I’d recommend the book. It has a large number of typographical errors for some reason, but all in all it’s worth a read if you are interested in the subject matter.

On another note, does anyone know if the Defiant located at the RAF Museum at Hendon has been restored and returned yet? I heard a few years ago it was sent away for restoration.
