Hello folks,
Back from a fantabulous visit to the USA and Oshkosh. Managed to get another new type to add to my 370 plus. A 1941 Interstate S1A Cadet built in August 1941 at El Segundo, now LAX at Indianapolis. A fine handling aircraft that outperforms the Piper J3 on the same power in terms of cruising speed.
This after flying with the owner on an aerobatic coaching session in his other airplane, a superbly restored Australian built DH82A Tiger Moth that has a unique history. The Japanese commander in, I think, Borneo flew to and from the surrender ceremony in 1945 as a passenger in it.
Now to the news for all De Havilland enthusiasts. This is the weekend of the annual Woburn pilgrimage and this year it runs to three days, Friday to Sunday 19 – 21 August.
The extra day is to provide time for the 2nd World Tiger Moth aerobatic championships. There are entrants from the USA, New Zealand, South Africa, Australia, Belgium and Sweden as well as from the UK. This takes place on the Friday and Saturday following a practice day at Old Warden on Thursday 18 August.
The Sunday provisional display programme is as follows –
1 Height Judging Competition Vimy replica
2 Para Jackaroo Take off
3 Para Drop on DZ
4 Gipsy Moth cavalcade Led by G-AAWO
5 Hornet Moth Air Race
6 Moth Monoplanes Minor, Leopard, Puss
7 Chipmunk Duo
8 Dragon formation Dragon and 2 Rapides
9 Tiger Nine Formation Take off and hold to East
10 Aerobatic Competition champion FREESTYLE display
11 Tiger Nine Formation Display
12 DH Canada Flypast Beaver, Chipmunk
13 DH Engine Types Hawk, Magister, Eagle and Speed 6
14 Departure slot for foreign visitors
15 Capt Nevilleโs Flying Circus Antics galore
16 Tiger Slow Flying Race 6 x Tiger Moths
17 Dove Formation 2 Doves
I stress this is provisional and subject to aged aircraft idiosynchracies and the vagaries of the UK summer weather.
It should be an absolutely cracking Woburn this year. See you there?
Cheers,
Trapper 69

PS – For lighter than air enthusiasts the Northampton Balloon Festival from Friday to Sunday is but 20 miles distant on excellent roads. So you could be there at 0600 until, say, 1000 then at Woburn from, say, 1100 until, say, 1700 with a return to Northampton for the evening flying and night glows from 1800 until as late as you like. You might get around 5 hours kip then its off again. What hedonistic bliss……………!!!!!!!!!!!! Bet you are a zombie on Monday morning. I used to be back in the early 1990’s when I did just that, flying balloons at Northampton and Tigers at Woburn. Wonderful.

Largest aircraft to land at Woburn!
It made it today !! ๐ฎ ๐ฎ ๐ฎ Also, here are a couple of interesting Tiger Moths at Woburn today from Sweden and Denmark.

I’ve just had word that the Vimy has landed safely at Turweston.
That’s great news – will have to pass Turweston on way to Woburn tomorrow (sorry that’s now today) so might call in to see if it’s beat us there.

Wonderful sight departing Dunsfold tonight, the crew seemed to be enjoying themselves, thought I recognised the occupant of the right hand seat ๐

Are they bringing their own aircraft or is this just pilots ‘borrowing’ UK machines?
By: RPSmith - 19th August 2005 at 17:05
Yup. Overhaul going on at Dunsfold today and yesterday. Engine runs later today, moving to Turweston on Friday (Don’t know time yet) and then Woburn at weekend.

Any update on how the Vimy is getting on????
By: Skybolt - 17th August 2005 at 20:12
The Saturday programme includes rounds 2 and 3 of the aerobatic contest and several club competitions. There will also be a display practice session for the following days airshow participants and the normal flow of visitors plus local flying by De Havilland aircraft owners. Hope this will whet your appetite especially as the Vimy should arrive at some time accompanied by an explosion of camera lens shutters. There will be more than the usual number of trade stands all with items appropriate to the occasion and the Woburn Abbey caterers purvey excellent nosh should you be in need of sustenance or other refreshment. On the other hand the park is absolutely ideal for a family picnic so do dig out the hamper, crockery and utensils should you be so inclined.
Cheers,

PS – I am partial to smoked salmon and cucumber sandwiches, crusts off and cut into triangles. Brown granary bread medium cut preferred. Dream on……… dream on..!!!!

The Vimy is arriving Saturday to depart Sunday at the start of the display. Subject of course to servicability and weather. It will be a justifiable exception to the DeH only rule and an absolutely magnificent one too.
What an achievement to successfully re-enact the Alcock and Brown crossing in 1919 from Newfoundland to Ireland. Even in this day and age the crew are brave men indeed.
To see the Vimy towering above the other types will be a sight to entrance every aviation photographer.
Cheers,

Odd, just noticed that this thread seems to appear again on page two, with the info I was looking for on the Vimy.
Do you want to combine the two webbie, or is this a strange case of parallel universes?

Have heard rumours too, of the Vimy replica arriving Saturday, departing Sunday.
Any news on that?

Trapper69/Skybolt.
My group of arm wavers and myself will be there as part of the bigger marshalling team on Saturday & Sunday.
Looking forward to it. I’m going to try and do the balloons as well as I’ve been there virtually every year and makes a nice change to the usual events I’m at where I’m more often than not “working”
Now all we have to do is pray for the good weather…

Is there an echo in here?
Can’t make it, and never have but I must get around to it one year.
