Demise of an airfield….

I was sorting through a large box of old photographs this afternoon and found these images of an airfield being bulldozed and thought someone mightknow more about them. I’m not sure the location but it’s an airfield near London, not Bovingdon as I know what that looked like. My first thought is it might be RAF Hornchurch? Any one got any ideas?

Thanks

Chris

Happy memories of Martlesham Heath in 1952, when I spotted some of my very first planes: Mosquitoes, Martinets, NF11, Oxford, even Viking VX141. I used to sneak onto the field from my Grandparents’ house through the boundary hedge, until turned off by a Landrover crew, and just watch them taxy by. They still have an active Aviation Society with a nice web site, as Scouse mentioned. Worth a look.

Definately Martlesham Heath. Cracking shots G-ASSV, you ought to post them on the Airfield Information Exchange forum, they would be much appreciated there.
The tower is preserved and I believe is a museum now.

Yes, Martlesham. ‘A’ Type hangar clinches it. Here’s some Spits at MH in Aug 1960 …

The tower (watch office) certainly looks like Martlesham Heath, link to Control Towers below :-

Keith.

Looks probable keith, the orientation of the code letters also I think points to MH,but I am not a Signal Square spotter…Hopefully one will come along soon 😀

Sorry…didnt explain my comment about ‘Depends how you look at it’ !!
The orientation of the code letters vis a vis the Tower should positively identify the airfield, and maybe Hangar/tower type as well.

Of the two, Martlesham Heath seems more likely. Harwell was handed over to the atomic energy people in 1946, while Martlesham Heath ceased to be an RAF station in the early 1960s, which is consistent with the Bedford TK and Thames Trader lorries in the second picture.
The building certainly look similar to those pictured on the Martlesham Heath Aviation Society website http://mhas.org.uk/MHAS/index.html, although I wouldn’t like to say for certain.

By the code on the signals square…might be

A…Harwell
or
B…Martlesham Heath

depends which way you look at it 😀
