At the start of April the demolition of the Newcastle City Library started, the first two photos were taken in the few first days and the rest are all from today (27/04/07).
The work can be seen also via this live webcam: http://www.newcastle.gov.uk/core.nsf/a/newcitylibrarywebcam

Lets hope they look at demolishing the Central Motorway in Newcastle as well. Couldn’t believe it when I first moved here as the slip roads to enter the motorway are also the slip roads to exit as well as being a short cut if you don’t want to actually use the motorway but get somewhere near! I’ve never seen that anywhere else but always think that it was probably designed by someone who used to like smashing cars together as a child! It’s also a pretty ugly eyesore as well!

Thanks bexWH773,
I’m glad it’s gone, it was a monster. Just to point out, it’s not going to be a car park;) . The building of a new library is due to start soon.
Regards, Chris

I hope they do the same thing to Birmingham Central Library because that is an equal monstrosity.
Lets hope they do the same to Birmingham full stop!!

And in 40 years, this style of architecture will probably be considered an eyesore…:D
If that’s all they’re tearing it down for, seems like a waste of tax money.
A lot of 1960s buildings are very expensive to maintain, to the point where it can be financially worthwhile knocking them down & rebuilding. Built cheaply, without regard to long-term costs, using low-grade concrete which has deteriorated badly & is horribly expensive to repair. Often contain a lot of asbestos, which puts up repair costs (also puts up demolition costs, but at least that’s a one-off). Poorly insulated (built when fuel was cheap, & expected to remain so), & cost a fortune to heat.

I think Newcastle Council are trying to remove most of the 60’s concrete eyesore’s ….

I think Newcastle Council are trying to remove most of the 60’s concrete eyesore’s and aiming on the older and more modern image such as the old theatre and the more modern Life Centre.

In a country where buildings are routinely 200-300 years older than the country I live in….
This looks to be a fairly new building.
Why was it brought down?

Can’t find out who the guide dog requiring deaf architect actually was but the disgraced architect was John Poulson.
If you are really keen there is a web cam set up to record the buildings ‘sad’ demise, obviously nothing happening today.

Was this monster designed by the infamous archtiect whose name I forget, who got jailed for bribery and corruption involving deals with Newcastle council in the 60’s.
No, Pete. The architect responsible for this eyesore was, apparently, savaged to death by his guide dog shortly after construction was completed. :diablo:
