By Lewis Bazley.
Actor and filmmaker Dennis Hopper has died at the age of 74, at his home in Venice, California, after complications arising from his fight against prostate cancer.
Best known for directing and starring in 1969’s classic film Easy Rider, Hopper was with his family and friends when he died, his friend Alex Hitz was quoted by the Reuters news agency as saying.
Having made his film debut alongside James Dean in Rebel Without A Cause in 1955, with Paul Newman in Cool Hand Luke and John Wayne in True Grit, Hopper’s Easy Rider marked an era of counterculture movies in the late 60s and early 70s.
He later starred in Apocalpyse Now, Rumble Fish and Speed as ell as playing a memorably villainous role in David Lynch’s Blue Velvet.
Hopper, who had most recently starred in 26 episodes of the Crash television series, was given his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in March, with the likes of Jack Nicholson and Viggo Mortensen attending the ceremony.
“Everyone here today that I’ve invited and obviously some that I haven’t invited have enriched my life tremendously,” he said at the time.
“They’ve shown me a world that I would never have seen being a farm boy from Dodge City, Kansas, and learning things I would never have learned.”
He was nominated for a best original screenplay Oscar for Easy Rider and received an acting nod for high school drama Hoosiers.
Hooper’s final months had been marked by a fraught divorce battle with Victoria Duffy, his wife of 14 years.
The actor is survived by his and Duffy’s seven-year-old daughter Galen, as well as three older children from his previous marriages

Not the ones I read – I don’t think anyone was ignorant of the Hopper who lived through 15 or more years of his life in a haze of drugs and alcohol.

Very sad news, but what a life, a genuinely cool Hollywood actor.
It has to Rebel Without A Cause, Easy Rider, & Apocolypse Now for me.

A giant, a one-off, a multi-talented artist who had struggled with prostate cancer for a long time and whose fight was finally lost yesterday.:(

It seems like five minutes ago that I read that he’d been diagnosed with prostate cancer, around the same time as Sir Andrew Lloyd-Webber.
Poor chap, how sad that he had to cope with divorce problems as well as his illness.

I feel like an old friend has gone. So many great movies, but my favourite must be his creepy villain in ‘Blue Velvet’…
RIP Billy
