During the reporting of the Icelandic Ash problem this morning Solent Radio our local radio station reported the list of airports effected by the ash, one of those was Derby Airport. Seemed a strange name from the past to me. Is EMA still called that now?

…………and Argonauts as well. Who would put one of those down, nowadays, on a grass airfield – and more so, take off from the same (sans passengers, not surprisingly)!
I had forgotton about the Argonauts – it must have been a sight on a grass airfield, not to mention the sound of those Merlins!

I remember the Marathons in the hangar 62/63 all covered in dust and looking very forlorn. Seems like a time capsule now.:)

Derby Airport – Burnaston – was not closed as a result of an Icelandic volcanic dust cloud but in consequence of a certain Japanese car manufacturer building its plant on it. Although having regard to its commercial standing resulting from the recent serial vehicle recalls, maybe soon the site will be vacated by it!
In that case bring back the Marathons and Dakotas – at least they didn’t need to be recalled!

Possibly they were referring to the grass light aircraft field which is 6nm SW of Derby. Known, I think, as Derby-Egginton.
which is of course the home of DH88 Black Magic (G-ACSP) and the Comet Racer Project. Attend one of their open days, if you get the chance, to see progress.

Yup as said Derby is a grass strip and a hedge…… though the hedge has a few holes in it these days :p
EMA is closed bar the odd light stuff doing VFR flying, they are out at the moment repainting the White Lines on the runway….. making a good thing out of a bad day I suppose..
