Derek Robinson, Hullo Russia, Goodbye England

I think this qualifies as “Historic Aviation”?

I read a few write ups of this in some of the broadsheets, they were very favourable. The author published it himself and it can only ordered via his WWW site. I had a lazy few days at home and decided to treat myself. I sent a letter and cheque on Monday, the book arrived today (signed for me as well :D)

I almost expected 300 A-4 pages printed from word but its nicely done and while £15 is a lot for a paperback, I’m really looking forward to it. I’ve read a lot of his work, the aviation based ones are all enoyable, “Kentucky Blues” I gave up on, the spy network ones are worth a punt as well IMO.

I’ll post again when I’ve read it if there is any interest.

Finished this today, its enjoyable and worth the self indulgent treat.

It got me digging into the V-Force at the Cuban Missile Crisis (the book says that the V-Force didn’t disperse, I thought they did)

If you see this around, I would recommend it.

You can, of course, borrow it from the library but you won’t get a note of thanks for buying it from one of the best writers of fiction about the RAF that there’s been.

Well, it gave me a kick anyway.

He says on his website that he is thankfull for being english so he can reach out to a large audience. I wrote mine in Norwegian, and I see all the problems it causes. There is a major audience worldwide, and I’m not reaching it by doing it in Norwegian. I’ll see about that translation now :p

My vote goes to ‘Goshawk Squadron’. Stunning tale! But I am biased because my aviation interest tends toward WW1…..
It does inded.

I enjoyed it, a good read but don’t expect anything to come close to ‘Piece Of Cake’

I got a copy from the local library, £15 for any paperback, let alone one with such bloody awful cover art and badly presented blurb on the back cover is a lot of money indeed.
It is a lot I agree, it was an impluse treat for myself. My view (when explaining the cheque stub to the Mrs…) was £15 for however many hours entertainment is good value. I’ve paid £60 for a dull football match, £30 for the family to sit through naff films (Horton Gives a Hoot…. daddy didn’t give a **** !).

I read the first 70 odd pages last night, it moves along swiftly and while I think “Piece Of Cake” is his best by far, this is well worth a read and I’m looking forward to getting back into it tonight.

I’ll stand corrected, but I think this book contains P.O. Silk, from Robinson’s “Damned Good Show”?
