whilst we have a really interesting on going thread about scrap aircraft over the years.. I wonder what is actually left now in 2011.. derelict air frames are few and far between, compared to the 1980-90s ??
has anyone any recent pics, or seen anything this year ??
just thought this would make a interesting subject 🙂

In the 1990’s MHAS had a Two Seat T7 Hunter an ex export (Danish I think) single seater and a cockpit do not have a clue what happened to them I hope they still survive.Sadly about 18 months after I left the place seemed to go to pot and their tenancy at Barton seemed to go shall we call it not to be personal very fluid.I lost track of things having no further connection with them as I was involved with new projects in the North East and outside of the UK.

Then of course talking of alongside the A1 there is/was the Lightning as you approach Newark on the South bound side.Very sad about that aircraft

Firebex, could this recent thread be the Hunter you saw ??
Keith.
Hi Keith Not sure the photo’s show an aircraft that looks a bit more tidy and clean than the one we saw but perhaps we caught her on a bad day and dirty.
I wish I could remember the damn service area,All I can remember is that inside it has a lot of memorabilia and a rememberance section to pilots and aircrew who had lost their lives.
I am not 100% but the ATC squadron I think was something like Baldock ? there was a very worn and tired sign to this effect in the cockpit window. The aircraft is or was parked right up in the far corner of the service area against the barrier to the roadway and had a couple of cones and a bit of barrier tape around it.It was also on the WEST bound carriage way service area. I remember we were travelling back from visiting GB replicas heading back to Newark area to rejoin the A1 to come back North with a trailer load of Spitfire stuff.Have been back that way once since but did not notice the aircraft unless it was moved back from the road side but it was first time very easy to spot and you could see it from both directions.

Very pleased to hear about 509 what about the Hunter that belonged to the ATC that sat in a service area on the A17 I think it is I last saw it about 4 years ago and it was looking tired and in need of TLC

What’s the situation at Long Marston nowadays?
WR985 looks as though it’s dodging the scrappy. How long will it last before it falls down – looks a right sorry state….

509 is indeed safe and well. And the cockpit should now be re-equipped with the control column and instruments I gave them…

Yes Mike, XF509 moved to the Fort Paull museum.

The Hunter owner has sent a message to a forum I frequent to make it clear that he is an enthusiast and that it is not abandoned. He is doing a restoration as time and funds permit.

No Idea, It’s not part of the museum but located a few hundred yards up the road. It looks very complete, painted an odd camo green colour and is laying on a stack of wooden pallets.
Seems an odd place to have it next to the road in a farm field as anyone could climb all over it.

very true, most euro stuff scrapped, and god knows what happened to the 4 Su-7’s in Afghanistan ?? .. they would be a dream come true, just for parts.
it seems most derelict airframes now are in places that are totally un accessible
to the general public, and in the uk, they all have owners who might not be restoring them, but who still want them, Birlingham for instance.
whats happening with the hunter at thorp, whats the story behind that airframe ?

Lots of stuff lying on airfields in Eastern Europe.
Nowhere near as much as in the 1990s. Most of it has been cleared years ago.

I picked up the tail frame of a CAC Wirraway on the weekend from a farm, but I would say there is not much left other than what’s on farms etc. Its been pretty much picked over or sent to scrap – a lot was lost in the last few years of the drought when scrap prices were high, farmers desperate for a few dollars, scrapped what they could 🙁
Still, just happy to have the little bit of frame 🙂
