I hope I made the R44 some interesting even if it might appear as an “everyday” helicopter – at least here in Norway…

My chum’s Jet Ranger is great. I’d rather fly in that anytime than a C172 or similar Spam Can.
But put a Stearman (say) up against a Robinson and there’s no argument on Earth that would persuade any right-thinking person that the latter is a sensible choice.
Personally I’d love to extend my PPL to include the (H) if I could afford to fly a serious egg-beater (Or even that Bell 47 up there)

I’d love a Jet Ranger…but it’s cost-wise not in the same league as a 172 or most other GA aircraft. And with the extra seats, speed, and altitude performance, it would be a lot more useful in my part of the world. But since I probably couldn’t find four friends that trust me enough to fly them, the payload issue is pretty academic. 😀
The great thing about the Robinson is the throttle governor…makes flying it more like a turbine ship and with less workload then a 47.

BTW: I spoke with a guy in Texas who offered to build me a civil OH-58 for about $100,000. Not a bad deal. But, it would have been licensed as “Experimental” here in the US and made out of overhauled military surplus parts. A civil, certified Jet Ranger goes for a lot more than that.

I agree with your statement about Stearmans vs. Robinsons…I have several friends with Stearmans and they have a lot of fun with them. I’d take a Stearman over a Robinson (or a 172, etc) any day…but not over a Bell 47.

I think rotary flight is only for some.

I don’t think it’s an either / or situation.

I think rotary flight is only for some. I’ve tried both and I can honestly say helo’s come out on top everytime.

Have to disagree, naturally :). The R22 is UNDOUBTEDLY the hardest helicopter in the world to fly. Yet such a dream, however, I think a lot of people secretly would love to try them, just embarassed lol.

I’ve always referred to Robinsons as motorcycles with a rotor.
Not a bad helicopter, just not quite a real one either. 😀

I admire what Frank Robinson has done…designed and started a new company from scratch, certainly more that what I’ve done…and a lot of people find the R22/44 to be a usefull piece of machinery.

I have a bit of time in one, and my instructor had 2000+ hours in them..and he didn’t have anything bad to say about them.

But sorry, I’ll stick with a Bell 47.

Hear hear 🙂
I’d like to have an S76 or B222 (yes because of the TV series) but I don’t think my summer bonus will cover the expense 😉

I trust you are not confusing the category ‘helicopter’ with the individual product ‘Robinson R22/44’?

I’d love to fly a serious helicopter. The Robinsons just don’t qualify as far as I am concerned.

Though your images are excellent I’m afraid there’s nothing that could make the R22/44 ‘interesting’ to me.

Intrigued to see how flies are attracted to them. Bit like something you might stand in 😮

Seriously – good pics though. Thanks.
