DF loop Aerial Question.

Can anyone tell me if the DF loop aerial housing (egg shaped) on the top of WW2 RAF bombers were all the same size as a generic part of the DF equipment??? Or were they custom made by aircraft manufacturers????

Not a lot of use now, but there was one for sale at the biannual Peterborough Antiques Fair back in March this year – about 3′ long, lovely looking thing, and I was sorely tempted, but I couldn’t justify it to the wife as a display item…
About £350 I think the trader wanted for it. I asked him what it was off, and he said Stirling, but couldn’t give any further information.
It was still there when I left the fair though.

Just wonder what the interest would be?

Hi

I’d be interested in the dimensions – not really much use to your purpose sadly

Hey guys – I just recieved the missing piece of the jigsaw from Stuart H in Scotland. I now have enough of the type 3 housing to make up some reproductions. These would be correct for the Whitley, Halifax, Stirling and as far as I know the Wellington too.

Just wonder what the interest would be?

This section is from LJ882 ,looks like a part of a type 3 as the joints are vertical..and you are spot on John, from this part, the internal diameter appears to be around 11.5 “… Yes some copies would go down well.

IIRC, the internal diameter of the type 3 fairing should be just over 11″ as that’s the diameter of the loop itself. We’ve got a type 4 which is much too small but would certainly be in the market for a repro type 3 Elliott.

Martin, I suspect that the one you have is correct, 4′ seems a tad long to me

I had a clear ‘plastic ?’ Complete DR aerial years ago..looking at this..a type 3.. The joining seam was horizontal but it was only about two feet long. The loop aerial was made of hardwood with copper/ brass wire…Ken Ward had it off me,the one I have now is only around three feet long though…didn’t realise there were so many types.

The Whitley used the type 3. From memory this is the larger type – it’s 4′ long and built in 3 parts.

Four Feet long???????? That’s huge..doesn’t look as big in your photos..

That’s not the Whitley type Cees – the horizontal ones are fairly common…. Are they really the type used on the Stirling? As you say, the Whitley and Halifax DF housings had a vertical seam.

I got one about ten years ago, it was made from resin impregnated cloth or something similar. Peter van Gelderen has it now fitted on his Stirling cockpit.
strangely it had a horizontal seam while a Whitly we found bits of had a vertical seam.

I have collected enough broken housing parts to make patterns and we could get a batch cast up. How many DF loop housings are needed? Who wants one? Do Martin and the Stirling Project have any DF loop housing parts/fragments?
