DH.84 Dragon

Can anyone confirm if the wing ribs on the swept outer panels of the 84 are inline with the airflow as several drawings show or do they remain at right angles to the spars as with the Tiger Moth. I suspect that the urban myth “they used DH60 outer panels on the DH.84” is quite wrong as I can see things like washout on the tip leading edge which isn’t there on the Moth.

The outer wing on the DH 84 dragon are differnt to the DH60. Ron Souch told me so, when he and his son Mike came to look at the Dragon parts we stored for Mike Russell. Mike Souch then bought the Dragon project G-ACET. I will see if i can find a photo of the wings we had i also have a DH 84 maintance manual, my father has a parts list.

And here are the ribs in flight ! G-ECAN on a rare visit to the Inverness area in 2009,captured from our trusty Cessna 172.

Thank you all gentlemen. This looks like another job for ‘Drawing detective’.
It’s clear to my eye that the ribs are at right angles to the spars “ala Tiger Moth’ (a typical DH why spend money). The Granger drawings and those in Moths, Majors and Minors show the ribs at an angle and not as in Dave’s excellent pictures. There is probably some commonality with the original Moth construction, clearly the ailerons are different as may be the rib spacing.

Dave, if there are any drawings of the wing plans in the manual would it be possible to scan them please (only one panel port or Stb).

Regards

John

Gooday All

I think I heard that someone had built a Tiger wing and made ribs that were parallel to the airflow.

Anyone else hear such a thing or is it my mind playing tricks.

cheers

I think that it would be an awful lot of trouble both with certification as well as construction wise as the ribs would have to be longer and totally different for minimal aerodynamic gain. Ok if you’re starting something from scratch.

Sorry there are no wing drawings in the manual. The only drawings i have seen must have gone with the G-ACET project.

Obviously one would be building a new set of wings and the plane would have to be in the experimental category. The resulting aeroplane would not be a Tiger

What is not obvious is the quantum of the reduction in drag – could be more than one thinks at first consideration.
