Sadly you’re are right Mike, just the type of plane that decides on the speed and amount of people involved at the time.

hopefully lessons will be learned.
Sadly, flying VFR into IMC has been killing people for almost as long as aviation itself has been going, and no doubt it will continue to do so at a prodigious rate. 🙁

If the cloud closed in as you were flying back home and you became lost what should you do ?
That is a very difficult question to answer without knowing all the facts, things like the equipment on board, etc.
The general rule is that if you fly into cloud unintentionally then you make a gentle Rate One turn on instruments through 180 degrees and head back the way you came so as to find the clear air you were in before.
But if you are in a valley that can be less than easy or safe
The next rule is always to go up for a think, rather than go down for a look
Modern GPS systems, even handheld ones, can with the correct software give you pretty good terrain awareness, but I certainly wouldn’t want to bet my life on that information alone.
I’m guessing though we will never know the exact details, it will remain one of the many *CFITs each year.

Very sad and whats spooky is on the Sunday here in New Zealand, members of the Wings over New Zealand forum flew in Stan Smith’s DH84 Dragon. Bit shocked to hear one of the other surviving Dragons was missing the next day!
I was working my way through having flights in the world’a airworthy Dragons and was hoping to add VH-UXG and the one in NZ to my list, having flown in G-ADDI, EI-ABI and G-ECAN. So very sad. R.I.P.

Dreadfully sad story, RIP to all. Not much consolation really, but at least they all went quickly, doing what they loved. My thoughts in particular are with the bereaved families.
