Something I thought might be of interest to posters here – Richie Piper (of Great War Display Team fame) has written an article on flying Shipping and Airlines’ DH.90 Dragonfly (pictured below), offering some interesting insight into how a vintage twin of this nature is operated and flown. It’s great to see the aircraft getting some exposure since its move to Biggin Hill; hopefully more fly-in visits and airshow appearances are on the cards next year for those of us who travel around the bazaars.

Thanks for all the extra info on -AYR, it sounds as though it hasn’t been airworthy for a time, a real shame.
As for the 601 Sqn crest, the comment on GAR suggests that previous owner Torquil Norman is a 601 veteran. That’s that question answered.

…
Like Errol I’ve seen AYR around the traps over the years, but I hadn’t realised she hasn’t been seen lately. Here’s a couple of photos to make up for it, taken from Fox Moth ZK-ADI of the same stable in 2009:
Same stable? It’s the same flight (at Omaka 2009) as my video above! – this was before Zac (K5054NZ) and I knew each other.
The set of photos from the flight is on my list of ones to reprocess, now that I have a better idea of what I’m doing.

Thank you 5054, see also my comment on the global aviation link above. Hope you enjoy, especially need the later modified FDE to cure the wing drop on stalling!

Lovely photo Elliot! Looks like I have some reading material for my morning tea break at work today.
Keith – I’ve downloaded the model and ZK-AYR skin, I just need to pinch my fiancee’s laptop so I can actually test-fly it!

For those interested in Flight Sim 2004, FSX or P3D, my model of ‘EDU & ‘AYR is available for free download at FlightSim (dot)com. (Possible also soon via PCpilot?)

Always a delight to see ‘EDU – and of course that she is getting much more airtime in new hands.
The Dragonfly is arguably one of the most attractive of the DeHavilland aircraft (although others, like the Albatross, can give it a run for its money) and I modelled this aircraft a few years ago – so it’s especially nice to see the article and photos.

ZK-AYR hasn’t been seen at an air show since 2009 I believe (I foolishly chose a seat in the Dominie ZK-AKY instead)

I am unsurprised to see it reported as not currently flyable.

An interesting article with some great pics, and it’s great that it has found a new home without going abroad.
Just a couple of quick questions;
Is it really the only flyer at the moment? I thought the NZ example was a regular flyer.
Just out of curiosity, what is the crest on the fin? It looks like the crest of 601 Sqn, but if so what’s the connection?
