Hi All
does anyone know how many DH Fox Moths are still airworthy in the UK?
Also are any of them still used in any way commercially?
(I’d love a flight in one).
Also I believe a Fox Moth was destroyed in an accident at Old Warden in about 1982. Has anyone got any details of this?
I know I could probably find out all this myself but I thought it might provide a bit of Friday discussion and a chance for people to post some pictures.
Also what about the D.H. 84 Dragon–can we apply the same questions to that type?
All the best
Andy

I had a great conversation with Viv Bellamy once, it went like this”
Viv: “Do you know what happened to the last DH86?”
Me “No”
Viv: “Well I do. Well I should do, I f*cuking crashed it”.
Viv had the design rights and was talking about a replica a year or three before he died.

Andy,
Very good chance that one or both Fox Moths will be at Wanaka, so I’ll take some pics for you if you like.
Cheers
Chris

Thanks, David. I had an idea it was something like that but wasn’t sure if I’d remembered correctly.

The Fox Moth G-ACEJ was almost totally destroyed by a Beech Musketeer which flew into the parked Fox during landing.

I think the Fox Moth at Old Warden was damaged by another aircraft but I’m not certain.
As Andy said, all the DH86s are long gone. I think I’ve read of a plan to recreate one.
Bet it takes longer than the original – designed, built, tested and certified in four months.

Here in New Zealand there are two Fox Moths flyable, and a Dragon too.
One of the Fox’s, ZK-AEK, is Sir Tim Wallis’s example
http://www.nzfpm.co.nz/aircraft/dh83.htm
The other is ZK-ADI which is I think in Napier (suitable home in the Art Deco City)
There are several here under restoration to flight too, with the Croydon Airrcraft Company and with Stan Smith who owns the flyable Dragon ZK-AXI.
I think all that info is current. What I want to know is, are there any of the very beautiful DH-86 Express four-engined airliners left in the world? Now that I’d love to see flying.

As far as I’m aware two Fox Moths still fly G-ACEJ and G-AOJH.
‘OJH is a Canadian built machine and has a canopy fitted for pilot comfort…
Also under restoration is G-ACCB.
I think it was G-ACEJ that was severly damaged at Old Warden although the exact details I don’t know.
As for the Dragon, in the UK there is G-ECAN (immaculate at Woburn last year – as was ‘OJH)
Iolar (EI-ABI of Aer Lingus) was flown regularly up until about a year ago.
I have to brag here that I have flown in Iolar (a delightful circuit at Waterford in ’98) 😀 😎
Sure there are others of both types flying in the Southern Hemisphere…
Lets see what else gets posted here today…:)
